About this event

Wear It Purple Day is celebrated annually across Australia on the last Friday of August, and is aimed at raising awareness and fostering safe, supportive, inclusive and empowering environments for LGBTIQ+ young people.

This year to mark Wear It Purple Day we are bringing together a panel to discuss current research and events, and explore what visibility and inclusion looks like to them. The panel discussion will be facilitated by Daniele Gianotti (they/them - he/him), Co-Chair of The University of Sydney's Pride Network, and will feature:

  • Arin Bryant-Munoz (he/him), University Archives Trainee, The University of Sydney Library
  • Dr Victoria Rawlings, Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow in the School of Education and Social Work
  • Joseph Black, Master of International Law student at the University of Sydney
  • Yuning Zhang (she/her), PhD candidate in Business Analytics at the University of Sydney Business School

We will also hear from Professor Mark Scott, Vice-Chancellor and Principal.

About the panel:

Arin Bryant-Munoz (he/him)is a proud multi-indigenous trans man, with roots in both the Worimi nation of New South Wales and the Mapuche people of Chile. Arin is committed to the preservation of culture - queer and indigenous alike - and hopes to continue his peoples’ unwavering dedication to history through his pursuit of a career in archiving and digital preservation.

Victoria Rawlings is a Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow in the School of Education and Social Work. She works alongside school communities with teacher and student co-researchers to explor their cultures of gender and sexuality. She is also conducting Community-Led research in other settings, including with girls and women who are Australian Football umpires and queer scientists.

Joseph Black is a Master of International Law student at the University of Sydney. They use diverse pronouns. They are the Queer Officer of the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA) and have participated in the Sydney Mardi Gras 4 times (3 times with the University of Sydney). Joseph is interested in completing a PhD and being a solicitor.

Yuning Zhang (she/her) is a PhD candidate in Business Analytics, the University of Sydney Business School. Yuning is a student representative across the university and advocates for the equity network to eliminate the discrimination on campus and improve the academic and social engagement. Yuning is the Education Officer in SUPRA and was the Deputy Queer Officer in SUPRA from 2021 to 2022. Yuning marched in Mardi Gras with the university crew in 2021 and 2022.
