Working from home again this year? The way you calculate your working from home deductions has changed. The records you need to keep this financial year have changed too. If you’re claiming working from home expenses for the 2022-23 income year, you need to use either the actual cost method, or the revised fixed rate method. The shortcut method is no longer available. 🔎 Deductions reduce your taxable income (which reduces the amount of tax you need to pay). 👉 They are not an automatic refund. For example – Edward earns a total of $60K for the 2023-24 income year. Because he’s kept on top of his records, he’s able to claim a total of $1,000 in deductions in his tax return. This means the tax he owes is based on his income being $59K, rather than $60K. But remember, you must have spent the money and weren’t reimbursed, the expenses must directly relate to earning your income, and you must have records to support your claims.

When you receive tax advice, take a moment to think if it sounds too good to be true. If you see any red flags, it could be an unlawful tax scheme that could really cost you. A tax scheme may include complex transactions or distort the way funds are used to avoid tax or other obligations. Beware of promoters who: 🚩 Offer zero-risk guarantees for their product 🚩 Claim to be an expert or refer you to a particular adviser 🚩 Ask you to maintain secrecy to protect the arrangement from rival firms 🚩 Charge a fee or commission based on tax saved.
