The orthodox view is that pain is bad for nonrelational reasons, that is, for reasons intrinsic to the experience of the sufferer. In this paper I make the case for the relational significance of the badness of pain. Drawing upon Helm’s (2010) theory of caring, I suggest that the badness of pain extends to how one’s life story is interpreted by others.
