Professor Carles Sierra Public Lecture
From a technological perspective, collaborative learning is a challenging problem. Organising students into teams, facilitating their interactions or supporting their mutual assessment are just a few of the many complex tasks of a highly combinatorial nature that require the support of automatic tools. In this talk Professor Sierra will introduce and demonstrate a few tools developed at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute to support collaborative learning, both online and in the classroom.

He will introduce an editor and execution environment for lesson plans that allows teachers to create, share, and actually execute lesson plans useful for student interactions in an online learning setting. He will show some AI techniques helping in the selection of the best set of student teams that take into account their psychological and competence profiles. Finally, he will present a trust-based mechanism to assess students based on peer-assessments. Altogether, they are a starting point of a new platform for online learning that puts task-based collaborative learning as the centre of student development.
