Family time means everything to my cousin Mike, his wife Kelly and their two gorgeous boys Harvey (4 years) and Charlie (2 years).
Their life was turned upside down last year however when their youngest - Charlie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML M5) at 18 months based on a persistent legion on his eye.
After 6 months of Chemotherapy (resulting in hospital stays, burns, rashes, and general nasty side effects), pneumonia and almost two weeks on a ventilator, Charlie was given the all clear - and he could finally play freely with his big brother. Life was good again!
Charlie was in remission for 5 and a half months at the beginning of this year, however routine blood tests recently identified that leukaemia cells now make up 90% of his bone marrow.
Kelly and Mike are now working out how they will relocate to Melbourne for at least 2-3 months so that Charlie can have access to the best treatment available - as he faces the toughest battle of his life... for the second time. This includes 2 months of Chemotherapy in Adelaide before a bone marrow transplant at the Royal Melbourne Childrens' Hospital. This will be followed by 100 days of isolation while he builds a new immune system from his donor cells. Mike and Kelly will need to take extended leave from work (Mike as a Senior Communications Technician and Kelly as a home Hairdressing Salon owner - "Dvine Hair by Kelly") to support their "Little Dude".
If you are able to contribute in any way possible to their cost of relocating and living expenses they would be forever grateful. This would help them to focus all of their energy into supporting their boys and freeing their minds from financial concerns. They are a very humble couple who have worked hard to build their life together. Last year, Kelly raised nearly $12,000 to donate to the Leukaemia Foundation - in recognition of the wonderful support they had provided her family - such a selfless act.
