#08 Navigating Change: Exploring the Dynamics of Gender inequality, Women's Empowerment, and Public Health
In this podcast episode, Dr Elizabeth Kirkwood is in conversation with Professor Camille Raynes-Greenow talking about role gender plays in health interventions and outcomes in low resource settings.
Dr Elizabeth Kirkwood discusses why we need to think about gender and health, in particular for women and children’s health as well as the work they are currently doing exploring the role of gender on 2 large clinical trials in Bangladesh.
Professor Raynes-Greenow and Dr Kirkwood also explore what needs to be done to address gender inequities and how we can keep striving toward gender equality.

Dr Nina Chad introduces the background and gives an overview of the World Health Organisation International code of marketing of breastmilk substitutes, and the challenges the world faces in implementing and enforcing the code.
Dr Julie Smith talks about the situation in Australia, which relies on the formula industry self-regulation instead of government regulation, and how it costs society, families, and the health system.
Ms Naomi Hull tells us about the impact of breastmilk substitutes marketing, highlighting how the formula industry targets health professionals.
#06 Tuberculosis: how can we improve prevention and treatment for children and young people?
In this podcast episode, hosted by Dr Sarah Bernays we hear from three experts working in paediatric tuberculosis (TB) around the world. Prof Ben Marais introduces the reasons why diagnosis and treatment of paediatric TB has historically lagged even further behind than adult TB and amazing potential for progress that exists. Dr Julie Huynh talks us through one example of this in research that she is doing in Vietnam within the SURE trial, which is testing the effectiveness of treatments that can be delivered at scale globally. Finally, we hear from Ms Patricia Moscibrodski, who tells us about a recently completed qualitative study that she conducted with adolescents affected by TB in Zimbabwe, highlighting the need for us to focus on addressing the pyschosocial effects of TB and how the provision of support may improve both TB outcomes, but also young people’s mental health.
#05 Preconception Care with Prof Kirsten Black
In this fifth episode, Prof Kirsten Black (an academic gynecologist at the University of Sydney) discusses her recent work on preconception care which describes health interventions to optimise the health of women and their partners prior to pregnancy and improves health related outcomes for themselves and their children. She also discusses some of the things that can negatively affect a pregnancy and the importance of education and improving policy to Improve the health of future generations.

In this fourth episode, Dr Gulam Khandaker (Director of Public Health and Public Health Physician for Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service) discusses his past work, his amazing team, the findings of his research in Cerebral Palsy. They also discuss the $1.3 million-dollar National Health and Medical Research Council Investigator Grant to study epidemiology, early detection, and intervention for children with Cerebral Palsy in low-and-middle-income countries.

#03 Determinants and outcome of timing of initiation of breastfeeding with Shahreen Raihana
In this third episode, Dr Shahreen Raihana discusses her research exploring the associated factors, inequalities and adverse outcomes of delayed initiation of breastfeeding in low- and middle-income countries. Shahreen outlines critical factors to consider in improving timely initiation of breastfeeding and how health managers can engage, inform and empower women with understanding the dangers of delaying breastfeeding. Dr Shahreen highlights the importance to create a supportive pro-breastfeeding environment around the time of childbirth, particularly for institutional births.

In this second episode of the Talking Global & Maternal Child Health Podcast Series, Kurt chats with Neha Faruqui about her recent study on 'accessing Cancer Care for children low and middle-income countries'. This was explored in the context of India which currently manages childhood cancers through a fragmented health system while simultaneously embarking upon a commitment towards achieving Universal Health Care. They chat about the barriers in place that prevent children from getting treatment for cancer, the methodology of Neha's study and the importance of easy access to Universal Health Care.
