“This term comes from the T-shaped (wooden) bell hammer (Shumoku) which is used to ring a bell or gong. It refers to the position of the feet when toes of both the front and back feet are NOT pointed straight forward, but are opened up diagonally with the heel of the back foot on the floor. This position interferes with a quick advance and/or retreat.”

An important teaching concerning three ways to overwhelm an opponent. The three ways are: "killing the ki ( spirit 気 ), killing the sword ( 剣 ), and Killing the waza ( 技 )." Killing ki means that one's ki overwhelms the opponent's ki, thereby forestalling his/her attack. Killing the sword means that one controls the movement of the tip of the opponent's sword by restraining or deflecting the sword. Killing the waza means that one anticipates the opponent, giving him/her no chance to attack.
