We have not had the chance since the Uluru Awards in 2019 to have a normal face-to-face awards format to give awards winners the accolades they deserve and celebrate in person after the disruptions from the pandemic.

The awards are not just recognition of all that the building and construction industry can achieve but also a time to reflect that despite the hurdles from COVID, the industry can still work extraordinarily hard to create sensational buildings and world-class infrastructure.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

This resort-style home makes the most of its surroundings to take the ocean vista, with every aspect of the build reflecting the highest quality workmanship. A prime example of the beauty and complexity of the design and construction is the spiral staircase, created from a single pipe and cut into curled handrails and a textured polished plaster soffit of the stairs, with this feature of the polished soffit being used in the entry and passage. The main house comprises four bedrooms, five bathrooms, living, dining, kitchen, and study, a fully equipped gym with kitchenette, pool, sauna, steam room, and a four-car garage. The judges were impressed with the exemplary finishes and the attention to detail by the builder and all trades.

Pepper Tree Passive House

NEW SOUTH WALES

Pepper Tree Passive House consists of triple-glazed thermally broken windows and doors. The entire dwelling has a ventilated façade and roof cavity allowing the building envelope to control its moisture. An internal air-tight membrane, including an external permeable membrane, has been installed on the entire building envelope to achieve air-tightness. This allows the building's environment to be controlled using minimal energy for heating and cooling.

Valley Workshop

Port Sorell TASMANIA

The Port Sorell project by Valley Workshop utilised plywood manufactured from plantation Tasmanian hardwood to construct structurally insulated panels for the floors, walls and roof. These advantages are improved sustainability, faster construction times, improved worker safety, and cost efficiency.

Mead Con

TASMANIA

This is a carefully extended existing home, precisely matching irregular floor levels and roof lines. Features of the project include the handpitched roof with internal exposed rafters, external rafter tails, and traditional bull-nosed weatherboard cladding to match existing cladding. The project showcases the team's carpentry skills and a contemporary homage to the craftsmanship of the period residence.

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

This extensive renovation involved the demolition of internal finishes, linings, and services, as well as structural alterations to accommodate a new open floor plan. The renovated home features an exquisite fireplace and detailed custom joinery throughout the kitchen, pantry, laundry, bathrooms, and wardrobes. With quality at the heart of this project, the end result is a gorgeous Hamptons-style home.

Secon Constructions

VICTORIA

This project was to revive, modernise and extend a heritage-listed home and create a new double-storey extension. Elements from this period home, like the gables, stained-glass windows and fretwork, all needed to be replicated or restored with care. The home includes hydronic heating underneath the floors, a fireplace, strategically placed skylights and a large pivot window in the living room to guarantee that ample light and uninterrupted air flows. This home truly is a harmonious combination of old meets new.

Walmsley Building

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

This project comprised alterations and additions to a 1950s heritage-listed Tocumwal cottage. A new two-storey wing was added to the rear of the original cottage, which hosts a kitchen, dining room, living room, rumpus room, master bedroom and loft. The exterior showcases a flowing timber façade and a series of screens at the upper level, sculpted to respond to window positions. The interior includes recycled and re-milled timber flooring, decking boards, and recycled Canberra Red bricks.

Glasshouse Projects

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

This project successfully resulted in the subtle renovation of an 1890s cottage and the construction of a modern light-filled rear addition, providing a range of textures and spaces to complement the client's requirements. The blackbutt cladding and stonework areas were extended from the new addition to the outside pool and entertainment area.

Hampton Homes Australia

QUEENSLAND

This radical renovation involved a complete rebuild from the inside out, boasting incredible craftsmanship. The interiors take advantage of the unique views, maximising living spaces, with extensive use of solid timber flooring and joinery. Judges were impressed with the curved steel and glass staircase which was welded onsite with a seamless finish. This project's level of detail and quality was a standout.

S FIVE – Highlands VICTORIA

The team at Eight Homes wanted to help first homebuyers realise their dream of home ownership by creating the ideal attractive and stylish first home that is affordable and functional. At 255m2, the home features four bedrooms and two bathrooms and comes in three similar designs, all with additional floorplan options to better suit the first home buyer's needs.

Summit Homes Group Mackenzie Grandeur

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Mackenzie elevation features 'shou sugi ban' cladding, softening the sharpness of the façade. The unique curved wall entry opens up the flow of the home when looking in and from the living space. The curvature of this wall pulls through to the shelving in the larder, which flows through to the laundry allowing all chores to be done in an intuitive and convenient space, hidden from guests.

Long Island Homes

Portsea 290 VICTORIA

The Portsea is filled with astonishing features and generous proportions. All the living areas are quite spacious and well-balanced. The kitchen offers many working options for any modern family. Detailed QA procedures and processes, such as independent review checks during construction and a mandatory 'third party' inspection at completion, assist the construction team in delivering a high level of consistent quality on time. This whole process is rigorously reviewed by a combination of design, construction and support teams to ensure delivery of the highest quality standards.

NEW SOUTH WALES

The Glenleigh home has a comfortable, sustainable living space using 'passive design' techniques that work together to provide exceptional heating and cooling methods. Its energy-efficient elements include orientation and shading, spatial zoning and good ventilation, insulated concrete floors, more comprehensive insulation throughout the house, comfort plus glazing on windows, and double glazing to skylights.

Incorporating customer feedback, the best-selling Glenleigh has been enhanced to increase the kitchen and living spaces along with improvements to the entertaining area.

Raymond Vincent Homes Cape Leveque

NEW SOUTH WALES

With recycled bricks, recycled hardwood posts, vertically grooved cladding, and steeply pitched roofs with raked head gable windows, the Cape Leveque is an expansive modern barn-style home over 30 meters wide. The entry foyer features an American oak staircase with painted risers and balustrade and a soaring 5.5-meter high ceiling. The kitchen and living area, which features a raised vaulted ceiling lined with v-jointed timber, extends to the outdoor entertaining area. Full-width cavity stacking sliding doors retract into the wall to open up the whole area.

Latitude 37 Sanctuary

VICTORIA

This double-storey home showcases custom design capability and construction quality on a grand scale. The Sanctuary home provides modern urban living and includes striking textures of polished concrete and timber finishes centred around the sculptural feature spiral staircase. The outdoor entertaining area features a horizon edge pool, spa, sauna, gym, covered barbecue, and outdoor seating area able to be viewed from every part of the home.

Gordon Bourke Constructions

QUEENSLAND

This exquisite home displays a meticulous blend of heritage character, modern finishes, and exceptional quality. This two-storey home has been designed to maximise the street appeal of the smaller allotment with a mix of symmetry, glazing, and a wraparound verandah, providing a modern take on the traditional character homes in the area. The small 370m2 allotment size, existing infrastructure, and neighbourhood character overlays presented several constraints on the construction.

George Built Constructions

QUEENSLAND

The Mackenzie is a modern Hampton-style home. The house utilises most of the large block to ensure street appeal while maintaining side access. The northeast-facing outdoor area is maximised and adjoins the inside open-plan living area. There is nothing that was missed in the modern interior.

Besal Construction

QUEENSLAND

The house was constructed to nestle into a block whilst making the most of the elevation over the lake and the remarkable view identified during construction. Creating a suspended concrete slab allowed the builder to undercut and incorporate an additional space. The innovative result saw an open pavilion-style entry flowing through to a generous entertaining area and pool deck with various living and bedroom spaces flowing seamlessly off the central outdoor space.

Pinnacle Custom Homes

NEW SOUTH WALES

The home sits on the side of a hill with two pavillions linked to create the house entrance. The first pavilion is the children's retreat and the second pavilion includes the master bedroom, living area, and mezzanine office space. The living area and kitchen feature blackbuttlined bay windows, blackbutt timber sliding doors and a fireplace on a custom-made steel bench. Externally, the house is built using monument cladding, highlighted by blackbutt cladding.

Renovation One

VICTORIA

The house's material palette is a mix of rammed earth, Weathertex, polished concrete, with Cemintel and Russian birch cladding. The sweeping curve facing north starts on the eastern side, capturing the morning sun and completes its formation to the west. Intricate tile work, well-crafted plaster, and the complete integration of the curved surfaces assure a rich experience. The Curved House hosts a variety of sustainable strategies, including solar panels, hydronic in-floor heating, thermally broken windows, and abundant natural light.

Ledbury Constructions

NEW SOUTH WALES

The project is dug into unstable rock with footings and walls engineered to counter the issue. All the concrete was formed and poured onsite, with the ceilings and external walls cladded with Oregon boards prior to pouring to give a wood grain effect. The cellar was carved into the mass of rock and left exposed internally. The fireplace platform was carved out of the natural rock shelf. The concrete roofs are cantilevered and post-tensioned, continually lowering over a thirty-year period. The doors and windows are designed to be adjusted over the years to compensate for this. The roofs are insulated and drained with rooftop gardens with concealed downpipes.

This resort-style home boasts well-considered spaces, including a fully equipped gym area with a kitchenette, pool, sauna, and steam room. The home consists of four bedrooms, five bathrooms, living, dining, kitchen, and study. There is a standalone studio with a four-car garage, living, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom facilities. The master bedroom features a truly stunning state-of-the-art walk-in robe. An outstanding home of the highest quality workmanship.

Key Findings

Sydney climate was the warmest of the 3 areas simulated and also a Cooling Climate with more energy required to cool rather than heat. Our models showed that of all Heating & Cooling energy required for the 3 homes here, only 25% was needed for Heating and 75% for Cooling. This resulted in more demand for its Glazing’s Solar Control performance in blocking more heat from the Sun from entering inside the homes (ie. a lower Solar Heat Gain Coefficient – SHGCw).

While Sydney #1 and #2 homes could still use single glazed glass, it required lower SHGCw and so Clear glass would not comply. We required a tinted glass (ie. Grey Tint) to comply as the lowest cost Glazing solution. This comes with an obvious Grey look and lower Natural Light levels however, so moving to a more recommended Insulglass LowE Prime® double glazed unit allows a neutral look away from Grey Tint with higher Natural Light levels but still addressing the Glare factor of bright sun and good Solar Control blocking - ideal for such climate – as well as heightened Insulation (lower U-Valuew). If a Clear look is still desired, then an Insulglass LowE Plus® double glazed unit would be ideal and still comply with the same Clear look as standard clear glass in a DGU with highest Natural Light levels – and even higher performing Insulation (lower U-Valuew).

Melbourne climate being colder is a Heating Climate with more energy required to heat rather than to cool. Of the Heating & Cooling energy use here, 80% was needed for Heating and 20% for Cooling. This resulted in more demand for its Glazing’s Insulation performance in blocking more inside heat from escaping outside through the Glazing (ie. a lower U-Valuew).

Hobart climate being the coldest modeled is by far a Heating Climate with significantly more energy required to heat rather than to cool. Of the Heating & Cooling energy use here, 98% was needed for Heating and only 2% for Cooling. This resulted in the majority of demand for its Glazing’s Insulation performance in blocking more inside heat from escaping through the Glazing (ie. a lower U-Valuew) and also a higher SHGCw value to allow more Passive Heat from the Sun inside through the Glazing.

While the results identify the lowest cost Glazing solutions to a 7 Star home, note that these are minimum performance factors and there are many alternative glass options that can exceed performance and can also add further comfort and wellbeing to those living inside, reduce energy costs even more and further assist with our carbon emission reductions eg:

Honed + Polished Concrete Sky

The scope of work was to hone and mechanically polish the concrete floors and interconnecting spiral staircases. Given the complexities of this project, quality control and safe work practices were put in place. With intensive labour and persistence, the end result produced a beautifully polished set of staircases.

Ladera required demolishing an existing building and constructing a new residential building consisting of 8 luxury apartments, basement parking, and landscaping. Early works consisted of a piling wall to two faces of the building, followed by a three-storey cut into sand and rock excavation. The refinement of crafted joinery and marble finishes is offset by the natural beauty of off-form concrete ceilings in the living room with a state-of-the-art kitchen to create an environment of natural ease and elegance.

Sarah Constructions Encore Apartments

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Contemporary vertical village comprising 8-storey and 4-storey apartment buildings with basement parking. This project was exemplary in all facets. Built to meet Livable Housing Australia Gold performance levels, the internal and external finishes are faultless. The project was delivered ahead of schedule and afforded excellent value for money. The client boasted that it was the best project they had been involved with.

Built Curtin Heritage Living's Cottesloe Redevelopment – Stage 1A

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Stage 1A of Curtin Heritage Living's Cottesloe Redevelopment includes 'Marine Views Cottesloe', a 128-bed aged care facility. The redevelopment also included 'Waterfront Cottesloe', which included twenty independent residences that provide unrivalled luxury beachfront living, with the best quality construction and design while incorporating space and accessibility.

Quay Quarter Tower

NEW SOUTH WALES

The 50-storey Quay Quarter Tower is the catalyst for the transformation of Sydney's iconic Circular Quay, supporting Sydney's future as a green, global and connected city. The client's brief was to upcycle the existing 1976 AMP Centre into a new tower for the 21st century. Multiplex was required to overcome key construction challenges of building movement, complex demolition and strengthening works, large cantilevered elements, and concurrent construction across multiple fronts. Multiplex developed a 'Jump Start Construction Sequence'. This allowed the partial demolition of the existing tower to be completed concurrently with the construction of the new composite structure and core extension resulting in a 16-month program advantage.

Vos Construction & Joinery

My State Bank Arena

TASMANIA

The My State Bank Arena project encompassing civil, renovation, newbuild and fit-out, was a complex project delivered in a very short time frame. This project confronted many construction challenges, so Vos Construction and Joinery employed a unique management structure to help overcome the obstacles. With 23,000 linear metres of Tasmanian Oak wall linings, 2,500 linear metres of blackwood in joinery, and more than 600m2 of blackwood veneer, timber supply was outsourced to free up the construction team. The footing design had to be amended due to poorer ground, meaning much deeper piles were required, resulting in the use of a continuous flight auger piling system. The project truly represents a unique achievement in construction.

UTAS Cradle Coast Campus TASMANIA

Via a two-pronged, carbon-focused approach, this is an excellent example of building sustainability. Carbon capture has been achieved by the extensive and innovative use of mass and lightweight timber throughout the building. By incorporating the existing Domestic Arts Building into the project, carbon emissions are reduced. Reductions in operational carbon emission are achieved via a broad range of strategies, including construction that minimises air leakage, extensive use of thermal insulation, extensive use of windows, and management of solar gain to avoid unnecessary heat loads.

UTAS Cradle Coast Campus

TASMANIA

The UTAS Cradle Coast Campus is an excellent showcase of Australian timber in construction. Substantial Victorian Ash framing supports the concrete upper floor and the glazed façade, while Spotted Gum is used in expansive timber screens. Internal finishes include extensive Tasmanian Oak batten wall linings and Victorian Ash acoustic ceiling panels.

Cubic Interiors Karrinyup Shopping Centre Redevelopment

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Cubic was engaged in delivering the partitions, ceilings and cladding package on the Karrinyup Shopping Centre Expansion. This was a difficult process, but Cubic could deliver a solution that maintained the design intent. The most onerous was the multiple feature ceilings that curved on both axes. These feature ceilings are a testament to the skilled tradespeople required to deliver such a unique ceiling.

ADCO Constructions

Lakelands Train Station

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Consultation has featured heavily in the management of this site, including with the client, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and within ADCO senior management. ADCO uses an online system for subcontractor and supplier use which has seen a streamlining of the onboarding and day-to-day management of the project. The practices in place are typical of the safety practices demonstrated by ADCO.

Inner Sydney High School – Stage 2

NEW SOUTH WALES

The structure rises four storeys in two sections with nine different façade types and two intricate podium slabs on the ground and the level 1 terrace. Stage 2 of the project involved the construction of a new 14-storey tower building. The new tower includes state-of-the-art learning spaces, laboratories, student common areas, a library, rooftop basketball courts, performance studios and a full-sized basketball court in the 6-metre basement.

Multiplex Constructions Westmead Redevelopment –Central Acute Services Building

NEW SOUTH WALES

The Westmead Redevelopment – Central Acute Services Building (CASB) encompasses approximately 89,200m2 of gross floor area. It includes the construction of a new 14-storey building for the management of severe injury or illness, urgent medical conditions, recovery from surgery and other critical and complex conditions, a six-level Innovation Centre, housing space for collaboration, research, education and training, and a new civic plaza forecourt and main entrance constructed above a two-level basement car park.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Karrinyup Shopping Centre Expansion involved expanding the existing Centre from approximately 59,600m2 to 114,000m2. The project comprised refurbishing the existing Centre, upgrading existing Major Tenancies, and providing substantial carparking and road infrastructure.

Walsh Bay Arts Precinct –Pier 2/3

NEW SOUTH WALES

The redevelopment of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct has delivered a harbourside art and cultural hub. The heritage fabric was carefully protected during construction. The redevelopment combines preserving and complementing the existing heritage timber structure with the latest technology in theatre, recording and educational facilities for the performing arts creating 'a building within a building'.

This project is an amazing addition to the 300 George Street development. The One Residences is an 83-storey tower and is the third stage of the Brisbane Quarter project. From the palatial foyer to polished finishes, every detail has been considered and carefully designed to epitomise everyday living. The opulent apartments offer a world-class residential structure in Brisbane's newest and most innovative precinct.

Alegre Bar and Dining fit-out focused on raw materials and natural, earthy colour palettes. Procurement of timber and labour was difficult. Changes in material selections and design solutions solved the issue of timber scarcity. Labourer shortages were managed by efficient installation processes and a push to fabricate off-site for easy installation.

AMA Projects Sirius Building New Ways of Working

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Undertaking a 4,800m² re-fit in just nine weeks, AMA Projects created a modern, flexible and healthy working environment. The project involved high-end joinery features, indigenous artworks and the demolition of existing walls to create an open-plan office space, new offices, collaborative work zones, and technological integrations. The design fitted to the Sirius Building, a 6-Star NABERS and 6-Star Greenstar Building, and the interior fit-out aims to complement this context with highly durable materiality and adaptable internal infrastructure.

West Village Retail Precinct

QUEENSLAND

The West Village Retail Precinct is comprised of 10,500m2 retail and commercial tenancy space and 4,000m2 of public realm/landscaping. It required the fit-out of two existing buildings, one being heritage listed, a new building, and landscaping. The Peters Factory heritage building required extensive structural modification works, restoration, and replacement of the distinctive steel-framed façade windows. The Eaves building brick façade was designed to replicate the inverse of a brick wall with custom clay T-bricks engineered specifically for the building.

Hinchcliff House

NEW SOUTH WALES

The building is the key heritage element of AMP Capital's redevelopment of Quay West Quarter, Circular Quay. The building contains four levels over 1000m2, offering four separate venues. The design's detailed nature incorporates natural materials that seamlessly integrate into the heritage building. Services were all sympathetically installed within the heritage building to minimise the visual impact while still achieving the operation requirements. Detailed front-of-house joinery and carpentry elements feature throughout.

Multiplex Constructions Stadium Rooftop Experience

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Stadium Rooftop Experience comprises a structural steel cantilevered lookout platform located on the western side of the Optus Stadium at roof level, together with a single row of elevated seats located on the leading edge of the rooftop structure at the eastern side. The new platform floor walkway cantilevers over the western edge of the roof, and a gantry cantilever to the east above the pitch.

This project consisted of a multi-disciplinary and contemporary learning environment across several areas within the school. Sarah Constructions produced an exceptionally high standard of internal and external finishes, all while faced with the challenges of working within a live school environment in a remote location. Innovative techniques were used throughout the build, resulting in timeline efficiency. A challenging project to complete, yet it achieved exacting standards.

Synergy Construct North Terrace Student Accommodation

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

This project inherited the complications of a tight North Terrace address and a heritage building to be retained. The builder's initiatives resulted in two additional floors being added to the build, and with the builder's proactive involvement, they achieved significant cost savings with no compromise to design. The project was delivered three months ahead of schedule, with the final product resulting in a very competitive cost per square metre.

St Leonard's College Inspiring Innovations

VICTORIA

The key elements of the build included a 2,800m2 Performing Arts Centre and a new dedicated learning space covering 4,200m2 over three stories. Stage 1 involved the construction of the Merton Building, a new teaching and learning environment. Stage 2 involved the construction of the Leonardian (Performing Arts Centre) with STEM classrooms, a 612-seat auditorium and the capability for theatrical and musical performances. Also included was a grand foyer, servery and cloakroom for hosting functions and intermissions.

The 50-storey Quay Quarter Tower commercial development forms the centrepiece of the wider Quay Quarter precinct. The complex, 200m composite structural steel tower offers 90,000m2 of premium-grade office space. Featuring the latest in commercial office technology, the building comprises a series of shifting glass volumes stacked upon each other to provide a striking, rotating façade that maximises natural light and harbour views while ensuring excellent thermal comfort.

TASMANIA

The finished quality of the civil and concrete work on the Henderson Dam project is second to none. Built on a remote site on an offshore island, this project was as much about logistics as it was about civil construction. Charter flights were required to transport workers, shipping for bulk materials and establish an island batching plant. Both logistics and construction management were comprehensively addressed, with the finished quality second to none.

Connecting Kakadu –Constructing 13 Bridges NORTHERN TERRITORY

Advance Civil Engineering delivered 13 bridges totalling twenty-two bridge spans. Advance provided a cost-saving of five million dollars, used 90 per cent of local materials and employment, surpassed the Government's Indigenous employment commitment, and worked harmoniously with the major earthworks contractor. Advance's innovative design with practical application and local expertise lead to the success of this project.

Are your showers ticking time bombs?

Despite builders best efforts, leaking showers are consistently listed in the QBCC’s 10 most common defects. Sadly, sometimes this is due to sub-standard workmanship, but most of the time it is the design of the shower itself which is creating the potential for disaster.

Most contractors are at a complete loss as to why, but detailed testing has shown how, by the action of expansion and contraction, water is “pumped” along glue cavities to escape the shower enclosure, no matter how well it is water-proofed.

The best way to prevent the problem is to seal the screen directly to the membrane, and NOT to the tiles.
