Governor's Multicultural Awards - Nominations Now Open
The 2019 Governor’s Multicultural Awards are now open!
 
These important awards recognise and celebrate South Australians who promote multiculturalism and increase the understanding of the benefits of cultural diversity in our community.
 
South Australians are encouraged to nominate an individual or organisation that is passionate about making a positive contribution and promoting our culturally diverse State.
 
The awards are administered by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet through Multicultural Affairs. They are presented by His Excellency, the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, on the advice of an independent judging panel.
 
The award categories are:
 
  • Outstanding individual achievement
  • Arts and culture
  • Community sector
  • Media
  • Private sector
  • Public sector
  • Senior volunteer
  • Volunteer
  • Youth.

Now Open - Grants SA
The Department of Human Services’ Grants SA program is now open.
 
Grants SA is a one-off project funding program that provides approximately $3 million in grants annually to not-for profit community organisations to improve community participation, wellbeing and quality of life for people living and working in South Australia.
 
For the opening and closing dates of all Grants SA rounds and funding guidelines, visit the Grants SA website.

'Developing the Developer: A Focus on Diversity' workshop
There is still time to apply to participate in Screen Australia’s ‘Developing the Developer: A Focus on Diversity’ workshop.
People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are invited to apply to participate in the four-day workshop that will be hosted in Sydney from 21 to 24 November 2019.

The workshop is aimed at increasing the pool of talented experts from different sections of the community, including people from culturally and linguistically backgrounds, by enhancing their screen story development skills across different stories and platforms.

CALD support available: Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety
Individuals wanting to make submissions to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in languages other than English can now do so, with all interpreting/translation costs paid for by the Commission.

The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia has developed a tool kit to help organisations and family members to have conversations with older culturally and linguistically people to encourage them to tell their stories to the Royal Commission.

The toolkit includes prompts for conversations which explain:
  • what the Royal Commission is and how it does its work
  • why it is important that lots of people from migrant/refugee backgrounds tell their stories
  • the kinds of things people might want to tell the Royal Commission
  • how to send their stories to the Royal Commission.
The toolkit is now available on line at www.fecca.org.au/acrc

Submissions to the Royal Commission can be made in writing, by phone or by sending a recording.

Leadership and Languages and Culture Award Nominations Now Open
Nominations for the Minister for Education’s Award for Leadership in Language and Culture are now open.

Provided by the Minister for Education and the Multicultural Languages and Education Committee (MELC), the award is presented to an individual who shows a capability in more than one language, demonstrates community leadership, advocacy for a multicultural Australia.

Eligible nominees must be:

 
  • an Australian Citizen or permanent resident
  • 24 years of age or younger
  • nominated by another person or group, community organisation, school, etc
 
Nominations close at 5pm Friday 1 November 2019.

The award will be announced and presented at an awards ceremony to be held at Government House in January 2020.

The 2019 Multicultural Festival will be held on Sunday 10 November from 11am to 5pm in Victoria Square/ Tarntanyangga, Adelaide. 

All South Australians are invited to come and enjoy this free inclusive community event, which will feature multiple performances, activities and stalls that celebrate our many cultures through music, dance, arts, crafts and culinary delights.

This years’ event will see over 70 community groups come together to showcase and celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of the many cultures of South Australia’s community.

The State Government, Australian Migrant Resource Centre and Ambrose Business Solutions have come together to develop the DriveAbout App, the first EdTech application in foreign languages, to be launched in Australia.
 

The Hon Jing Lee MLC, Assistant Minister to the Premier, will launch the app which has been designed to assist young drivers to stay safe by improving their understanding of Australian road rules. 
 
  • Date: Friday 13 September 2019
  • Time: 4pm
  • Location: Adelaide Multicultural Centre, 23 Coglin Street, Adelaide.
 
The App is available in English, indigenous languages, Arabic, Dari, Mandarin, Vietnamese and Spanish.
