Madeline McKenzie (she/her) is an accredited mental health social worker who runs her own counselling business for women called Sit with Self. She also helps not for profits to set up mental health programs and provides training on trauma & wellbeing to community organisations. Madeline is a newish mum with a 14 month-old baby and loves connecting with nature and music in her free time. //
Hannah Yared is a psychologist, PhD candidate at Monash University, and a lecturer at Swinburne University. Her research examines issues related to race and racism in the fields of education and psychology, and her PhD research explored these issues from the perspectives of Australian school students. Hannah joins us on the show today to speak with us about the implications of diluting conversations about race and racism in schools, especially within the context of "Harmony Day" as it's called here in so-called Australia. //
Dr Kalyn McDonough, MSW, Fulbright Future Scholar and Visiting Scholar at the University of Melbourne. Kalyn’s background is in sport social work, and has run sports programs with young people in the youth justice system in the US. Dr Shelly Turner is the Chief Social Worker at Forensicare, the state-wide provider for forensic mental health in Victoria. She is also adjunct Senior Lecturer in Social Work and Monash University and adjunct research fellow at the Swinburne University’s Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science. //
Julie Green - With a background in engineering, teaching and international development work and crisis management, Julie Green started a Master of Social Work at Melbourne university in February 2021 in the midst of a lockdown in Uganda. Julie is set to graduate at the end of this year. she is on the line to speak to us about their experience studying social wokr, what motivates them and their plans for the future. //
Professor Louise Harms is the Associate Professor, Chair and Head of Social Work at The University of Melbourne. Lou has worked in hospitals and the Uni Counselling Service in the 1990s before becoming an academic in 2000. Lou has loved the teaching, research and leadership jobs I've held since then. Her interests are particularly in the areas of trauma and resilience - in health contexts and post disasters. She is the author of many books on social work and she joins us today to talk all things social work - what it means to be a social worker and what the future of social work looks like. //
