The red 'Menace' - filmscreening with John Hughes

We are organising a number of events marking the founding of the Communist Party of Australia on 30 October 1920. You can now register for two of those events, including the first in a series of Friday night films, which we've dubbed the "Red Film Festival".

Register here to join us for a screening of Menace, with a brief introductory conversation with filmmaker John Hughes.

About the film:

The early cold war years in Australia were characterised by attempts to suppress political dissent including banning of the Communist Party. In Menacewe see the experience from the perspective of those who defended democratic freedoms.

Artists, teachers, union officials, rank-and-file trade union members, lawyers and activists offer personal testimony on attempts by the Menzies government to ban the Communist Party in early Cold War Australia.

Three generations are represented: those who fought fascism in the 1930s, those who defended civil liberties during the 1950s, and young people in the 1970s whose cultural work sustains these traditions, while they are also critical of some aspects of their parents’ political practice.

Featuring Pat and Noel Counihan, Mick Counihan, Lloyd Edmonds, Dorothy and Ralph Gibson, Robyn Laurie, Bon & Ted Laurie QC, Stella and George Lees, George Seelaf and members of the Melbourne Pram Factory theatre.

You can help spread the word about the Centenary celebrations by forwarding this email or by sharing these two events, which are available on the Events tab on the SEARCH Facebook page.
