Unfixed documentary trailer
In 2023, Unfixed Media and Health Story Collaborative, created a four-part mini-series, The Unfixed Mind: Navigating Mental Health Today, chronicling the real-life stories of seven people living with mental health conditions. The mini-series aimed to provide these seven individuals an opportunity to authentically share their experiences and capture the humanity and genuine complexity of navigating mental illness in today’s world. How are their lives affected beyond just symptom management? What have they learned that they can teach all of us? How are their experiences the same and different across a spectrum of mental health diagnoses and compared to individuals living with other chronic health conditions? Ultimately, the project aimed to increase awareness and tolerance and decrease stigma among audience members. The stories shared are relevant to all of us, as we will all face mental health challenges in our lifetimes, to varying degrees, directly and indirectly, but with certainty.
The Unfixed docu-series began with 20 people who were willing to share their stories with us. They are all in various stages of living with chronic conditions and disability. Beginning February 2020, they began creating self-recorded videos once a month to reflect on specific topics that address what it’s like living with chronic illness. We then curated their reflections into monthly episodes. Their honest, unpolished moments are at the heart of the unfixed state - the highs, the lows and everything in between.

Life Rebalanced Chronicles documents the stories of nine vestibular warriors. None of them expected to be knocked down by a vestibular disorder. All of them looked fear, anxiety, and loneliness in the face and said, “You will not define me.” Their message is one of hope for everyone who struggles with invisible chronic illness and others who are navigating life’s challenges. The new six-episode docuseries will air weekly starting August 10, in conjunction with Balance Awareness Week (Sept. 19-25, 2021). The series is a collaboration between the Vestibular Disorder Association (VeDA) and Kimberly Warner, filmmaker and founder of Unfixed Media. In 2015, Kimberly was diagnosed with cervicogenic vertigo and Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) that manifests as a constant perception of rocking, bobbing and swaying. The Life Rebalanced Chronicles documents nine vestibular patients who are learning to live with disorders such as vestibular migraines, MdDS, Meniere’s Disease and vestibular neuritis. Through intimate conversations, they explore parts of the human experience impacted by their vestibular dysfunction – mind, body, spirit, relationships, self and life. They also share their personal toolkits for living and thriving with their disorders and provide strategies from meditation, yoga and journaling to advocacy and finding meaning and purpose within their “new normal.” “This honest and inspiring docuseries shines a light on invisible balance disorders and brings more awareness and empathy to the vestibular experience,” says Cynthia Ryan, Executive Director of VeDA. “We are honored to work with filmmaker and vestibular patient Kimberly Warner, who brings lived experience to each episode as she compassionately helps each individual share their unique journey toward healing and hope.” “When I developed MdDS and vestibular migraine, my life turned upside down and my sense of self dissipated as my career, dreams, friendships and confidence crumbled,” says docuseries filmmaker Kimberly Warner. “Returning to filmmaking and telling stories of those with chronic conditions has helped me rediscover my sense of purpose. Not only have I discovered our shared experiences and found solidarity, but I see how important these messages are for everyone who is navigating a challenge in their life, not just those with chronic illness. This series is about something bigger than a diagnosis; it’s about human perseverance and healing – even when there isn’t always a cure.” Life Rebalanced Chronicles will premiere exclusively on The Disorder Channel (available through Amazon Fire and Roku) starting August 10th with new episodes airing weekly. After a one week debut window, episodes will be released weekly through VeDA and Unfixed channels. About VeDA For almost 30 years, VeDA has been a highly respected source of scientifically credible information on vestibular disorders. Through publications and an online community, VeDA has reached millions of vestibular patients with critical information and support. The organization provides education and emotional support to patients with dizziness and imbalance. They connect patients with medical specialists through a provider directory of clinics that specialize in diagnosing and treating vestibular disorders. VeDA advocates on behalf of all who are impacted by vestibular disorders. Long Haul Voices: Living with Long Covid and ME/CFS Long Haul Voices is a mini-series created in partnership with Solve ME that amplifies the experiences of individuals with Long Covid and ME/CFS, the experts devoted to improving their care, and the challenges surrounding these largely invisible, poorly-understood diseases that affect a rapidly growing population.
MS Confidential is a monthly webcast that provides a safe space for personal and informal discussions for people living with multiple sclerosis. Consisting of four diverse individuals all living with various stages of MS they disclose some of their innermost frustrations and challenges, engage in open conversations with one another, and provide opportunities for viewers to participate as well.
We are conditioned to believe that perfect health, status, and successful careers are the key to happiness. But despite our perfection-performance oriented culture, many find themselves living lives of chronic illness, pain and disability that challenge this paradigm. In the media, we celebrate stories of heroes who have persevered despite the odds and triumphed over hardship but the reality is often less storybook. There isn’t always a cure for what ails us. Yet within this tension, the human spirit often not only prevails but thrives. When faced with the predicament of no apparent answer, no fix, many people with chronic conditions eventually find adaptation, connection, resilience and purpose despite our lives lacking what society told us would bring happiness. Why We Matter is a feature documentary that explores how and why the voices of the unfixed have been overlooked in our society, how they are shaped by the friction of constant adversity and why this world is a better place because their stories, struggles and triumphs are a part of it.

The chronic illness community often talks to each other. We understand each other. But we created this podcast to open up that conversation - to invite listeners in who may feel scared or sad or helpless when they hear someone with a disability or incurable illness speak. We want to build bridges between communities, not just within communities. We believe those bridges are built first through listening to each other with an open heart, to spend 45 minutes in each others' shoes. The guests’ stories in our podcast don’t follow a typical heroes journey or Hollywood arc. Having a chronic condition means just that - it doesn’t end, it can’t be fixed. And that can sting and make people turn away. We all want happy endings. Our stories are inspiring, but “inspiring” doesn’t always mean “feel good” - inspiring means it makes us think differently and open our minds. What we’re offering here is a space to hold, value, and recognize our shared humanity whether you have a broken back, a broken immune system, a broken family or a broken spirit. And through this shared space, we can lean into curiosity, compassion, and empathy while recognizing that we can all live meaningful lives despite - or because of - our challenges.
Unfixed Focus is an on-going, growing collection of short films that feature some of the individual stories from the original Unfixed community and beyond. Eventually, with enough funding and collaborators, we have a vision to share as many of these as possible - crews traveling to all the Unfixed podcast guests, MS Confidential panelists, the Life Rebalanced Chronicles cast, the Unfixed doc-series subjects, and the many partners and community members who haven’t yet been featured in content but are very much a part of this growing conversation.

Over the last year on Substack, I’ve been exposed to a wealth of brilliant writers that explore the messy complexity of the human experience through fiction, non-fiction, essay, and memoir. Reading their work has become an engrossing, educational, and often goosebump-inducing new pastime—from the profoundly attentive Death and Birds essays to a LGBTQ+ serialized novel that always leaves me teary, to weekly laugh-out-loud letters that celebrate and ruminate on mid-life—there is a wealth of wisdom to mine over here. Through this new offering, we will explore unfixed’s meaning and implication in different walks of life—illness, of course, but also relationships, family, aging, socio-economic challenges, trauma and climate change. https://unfixed.substack.com
