The Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities advocates for the rights, safety and wellbeing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer and asexual communities.

Victoria became the first state in Australia to have a Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities, previously known as the Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, when Ro Allen was appointed to the role in 2015. Dr. Todd Fernando was our second Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities – Australia’s first Aboriginal and queer Commissioner - in the role from 2021-2023.

Commissioner’s role

The Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities works closely with Victoria’s LGBTIQA+ communities to provide advice to the Victorian Government on the development of policies, services and programs that are inclusive and meet the needs of our diverse communities.

The Commissioner also works with community organisations, businesses and others to ensure the needs of LGBTIQA+ Victorians are better met and improves understanding about issues affecting LGBTIQA+ Victorians across the broader community.

Recruitment for next Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities

An open recruitment process for the next Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities is currently underway. The next Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities will provide advice to the Victorian Government and act as an important conduit between LGBTIQA+ communities and the government, facilitating positive discussions with Victorians on issues affecting LGBTIQA+ communities.

Importantly, the next Commissioner will play a leading role in the implementation of the Pride in our Future strategy, the Victorian Government’s landmark 10-year plan for LGBTIQA+ equality, while driving work to improve access to justice and equitable, inclusive and accessible services across the state.

Applications are encouraged from individuals with diverse backgrounds who can demonstrate lived experience and who have extensive experience working with Victoria’s LGBTIQA+ communities.

Applications close at 11.59pm on 8 April, 2024.
