Like us, he's salty when DIY repairers with competencies are dismissed or legislsted against repairing what they own. Many will just do it anyways but that's not ideal as repair then goes underground and awareness raising of its importance is diminished and skills are not widely known about and valued. And no, MiA is not keen on living with repair restrictions that's why we advocate and network for repair to be reset. #repairforeveryone is this year's Repair Day slogan. As for #righttorepairau it's about time the legislation moved from individual themes, like automotive to a universal coverage for all product classes, surely! As an experienced automotive training developer, I've been paying attention to the shifts in our industry. The recent RedBook NZ Market Update for Q2 2024 is straight-up about the challenges we're facing: • New car registrations are down 26% year-to-date • Used vehicle registrations are 10% lower than 2023 • Credit defaults in the motor vehicle sector are up 33% • EV registrations are down 72% compared to last year These figures show that there's an urgent need for adaptation in our industry. As someone who's spent over three decades in the automotive sector, I can see that this presents both challenges and opportunities for training and development. Now, more than ever, sales staff need more product knowledge to navigate a tighter market. For technicians, staying ahead of emerging technologies, especially in the EV space, is crucial. In September 2024, Australian new vehicle sales totalled 97,020 units, a 12.4% decline from September 2023. Toyota Motor Corporation Australia led the market with 18,110 sales, followed by Ford Australia and Mazda Australia Pty Ltd. Another huge milestone passed in Australia's EV sector, passing the $30k barrier for affordability! It wasn't long ago I was celebrating Australian EVs beating the $40k milestone, and now we have another. You can't underestimate the dynamism of Australia's automotive market today. Entrepreneurs are smashing preconceived notions about how the market works and changes. When I started in this sector, grey beards were telling me EV market share would be 2% by 2030 and as recently as last year that entry level EVs would cost >$35k. It goes to show how the amazing talent we have in the sector, from cars, trucks, fleets, charging and more are cutting their own path.

Financing electric vehicles (EVs) has become increasingly popular in Australia since the federal government announced there would be no fringe benefits tax payable on novated leases for eligible low emissions vehicles. While this concession can allow you to save thousands of dollars throughout your loan, there is still a big problem being faced by those currently novated leasing an EV: The retained value of EVs at the end of their finance term are currently nowhere near the mandatory residual values set by the ATO. The ATO are responsible for setting the laws around minimum residual values, and they are currently set at the following regardless of engine type: https://lnkd.in/g9qFS6RT

Growing from one model family to four between now and the end of 2025 will be an exciting period for the GEELY-owned #EV brand. I'm optimistic for it, however... For one thing, it's bitten the bullet taking learnings from the failure of its direct-to-consumer launch to embrace a more conventional network structure. Are all of these new brands good for the auto industry? More auto brands are arriving each month, which is good for the economy and consumer choice. This is a trend many countries are seeing. Yes, the auto industry needed a shake up, and this is it. However, having been in the industry for 35 years, I've seen what goes on behind the scenes, from planning, to design and development, testing, marketing, supplier, parts and logistics infrastructure, and dealer networks. It takes a lot to build a long-lasting, reliable auto company. An indication of how huge the infrastructure is is demonstrated by the fact that Governments will actually bail out almost bankrupt car companies. That's how ingrained into the economy these companies are. The point I want to make is this. Yes, the new brands will be good for competition and consumer choice, but where will they be in 10 years? Who will bail them out when they face tough times? Will we be left with a lot of bricked EV's, like Fisker? Your thoughts?

Cox Automotive Inc. reports that used car prices in Australia have declined for the 20th time in 21 months, reaching their lowest since January 2021. Despite strong sales, 40% of used vehicles sold in October were discounted by an average of 7%.

Second sales downturn for EVs in the space of three months isn't enough to sound the alarm bells as electric cars continue to grow in Australia Electric vehicle sales in Australia fell 13.2 per cent in June, marking the second monthly downturn in the first half of 2024 after a 5.1 per cent slip was recorded in April.
