International Day of People with Disabilities – Celebration, Learning and Action.

On December 3rd we celebrate International Day of People with Disabilities; a day endorsed by the United Nations to acknowledge the diversity and contribution of people with disabilities.

It is currently recognised that 1 in 5 Australians live with disability. As a community we can actively learn, raise awareness, and educate our friends, family and workmates that not all disabilities are visible.

International Day of People with Disabilities is one day in December that promotes what we can do every day to take action, challenge the way we think and break down the barriers for people with a disability.

International Day of People with Disabilities have provided a took kit for celebrating the day in your school. You can find it here:

Measuring the impact of COVID 19 on students due to transition out of secondary school in 2020

COVID 19 resulted in significant and rapid changes to the delivery of education.  It is evident through research and feedback that remote learning does not meet the needs of everyone.

Learning from home has caused significant barriers for vulnerable students, including those with a disability and learning and access needs completing their final years of study.  Impact on students may include limited educational resources and suitable learning adjustments, a decline in social connectedness and an increase in mental health concerns.

These factors are additional to the regular challenges of successfully transitioning into post-secondary education experienced by these students.

In partnership with Inner Eastern Local Learning and Employment Network (IELLEN), the NDCO program are inviting students to participate in a short 10-minute survey to better understand their experience of learning from home during COVID 19, particularly their transition supports and pathway options for 2021.

We understand that this cohort of students will need support in their transitions over the coming years. Strong response to this research will allow us to advocate to funding bodies for the right support.

We ask you to encourage ANY students who will transition our of secondary school this year to complete this survey, and to share this with your friends and colleagues.  Please share the survey link below:

Pathways to Tertiary- P2T

P2T is an online series of events culminating in a virtual opportunity to connect with TAFE and university disability practitioners for students with disability and the people that support them.

The series will empower students with disability in secondary education to develop knowledge and confidence and prepare for tertiary education, disclose their disability, seek out the available supports, negotiate reasonable adjustments and ultimately to improve transition into tertiary education.

So that the P2T team can be sure to develop content that meets the needs of students, we are asking for your support to share a quick 3 minute survey with students, families and colleagues. We would love to hear from you as well.

P2T will be happening in May 2021, we will be sure to send you more information as the date gets closer.
