Social Constructionism about Race, Deconstructed

The dominant position in philosophy of race is that race is a social construct. However, ‘social constructionism about race’ currently has three very different meanings in the literature, and so fails to make a single coherent claim. In this talk I will make the case that social constructionism is best understood as the view that race is a social kind, but that this view should be rejected on both normative and metaphysical grounds. There are no races, biological or social, only groups interpreted and treated as if they were races: racialised groups.
