ANU Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) Visiting Fellowship Program
As the hub for Chinese studies at ANU, the Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) facilitates cross-campus, national, and international research and teaching collaborations to promote greater understanding of the Chinese world — the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora. CIW is the place to come to understand China and the Chinese world.
The CIW Visiting Fellowship Program brings leading researchers to the ANU campus to conduct and share research that promotes the study of the Chinese world.
This Fellowship opportunity is for scholars of all academic disciplines who are based in Australian and overseas academic institutions.
Eligibility
- Applicants must have at least a higher degree (PhD) or equivalent professional experience, research and publications.
- Institutional affiliation to a University or equivalent research or cultural organisation is required.
- Fellowships are open to Australian (non-ANU) and international researchers.

This fellowship is not available to independent scholars or to students who are working to complete their higher degree.
Duration
There are two application deadlines:
- 15 March 2024: For fellowships beginning and ending inside August–December 2024
- 15 October 2024: For fellowships beginning and ending inside February–July 2025
The minimum fellowship period is six weeks and the maximum is twelve weeks.
Applications must include:
- the visitor's curriculum vitae (<2 pages);
- a statement, written by the applicant, regarding the purpose and period of the visit, the research and other activities to be undertaken during the visit, and the resulting benefits to CIW and ANU, and the potential research outputs achieved as a result of the fellowship. (<2 pages);
- a supporting statement by the ANU expert sponsoring the visit (<1 page); and
- a budget with details of the requested funding and supporting funding from other sources (<1 page).
Visitors must be sponsored by, and work with, one or more ANU Chinese studies expert.
Value and benefits
Each Visiting Fellow will be provided with:
- AUD$5,000 (domestic-based) and AUD$9,000 (international-based) maximum allowance in costs towards economy-class travel and accommodation in Canberra;
- An ANU office space with computer and printing facilities;
- ANU Library borrowing privileges;
- Access to ANU facilities and events.
Funding will be provided on the basis of reimbursement of expenses (receipts required). Visitors will usually require additional funding from other sources to cover their expenses.
Visitors will be provided with office space, computing/internet services, and limited administrative support.
Expectation
Visiting fellows are expected to make a public presentation of their research in the Centre’s seminar series, contribute to a graduate seminar/Master Class, write a short piece for the China Story and avail themselves of opportunities for scholarly exchange. Visitors are also strongly encouraged to give talks at other Australian research organisations and talks to the general public.
Assessment
Applications will be assessed by a Selection Committee. The available funding will be allocated based on:
- the benefit to CIW and ANU;
- the research record of the applicant; and
- the significance of the proposed research and other activities, and their alignment with CIW and ANU research areas. The extent of additional funding from other sources will also be taken into account.
Conditions
- Applications must be made through the online form linked below. There are two annual deadlines: 15 November for visits in the first half of the following year (i.e., January to June) and 15 March for visits in the second half of any given year (i.e., July to December).
- The duration of the Fellowship is a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of twelve weeks.
- Fellows are expected to be based full-time at ANU for the duration of the Fellowship.
- It is the Fellow’s responsibility to ensure they have the correct visa and travel insurance required for their stay.
- Fellows are responsible for securing the approval of their institution to undertake the Fellowship. Fellows must provide a letter from their institution supporting their visit to ANU before travel is booked.
- Fellowships must be commenced within the period nominated by the Fellow, and approved by the selection committee, unless otherwise approved. If a visitor award is not taken up within 3 months of the end date for the visit as specified in the application, then the funding offer will lapse.
- Fellows are encouraged to engage and participate in the collegial research culture across ANU including participating in CIW and ANU events and seminars.
- Fellows agree to comply with all lawful directions and professional standards of ANU.
- Within two months of completing their Fellowship, Fellows will provide CIW with a report outlining their research activities and outcomes from the Fellowship. Report content may be published on the CIW website and included in the annual report.
