The Central African nation of Gabon is making a grab for the visitor market that’s set to put it on the global map for ecotourism.

Highlighting itself as the planet’s ‘last Eden’, Gabon has a new campaign that showcases its natural attributes, cultural experiences, unique wildlife and status as the world’s most carbon-positive country.

Gabon launched its new destination marketing identity, ‘Discover Gabon, The Last Eden’, in a bid to promote ecotourism to the Central African state and develop the economy.

The launch is part of an initiative by President Ali Bongo Ondima to further tourism development under the Green Gabon strategy for sustainable development, which includes investment in infrastructure upgrades and high-end ecotourism.

It builds on the nation’s global reputation for sustainability, biodiversity and conservation that has garnered Gabon international awards for its leading role to combat climate change.

Around 88 per cent of Gabon is equatorial rainforest and the country has the world’s largest forest elephant population, home to around 95,000 of the critically endangered species as well as 30,000 gorillas and chimpanzees.

It attracts the Southern Hemisphere’s largest migrating population of humpback whales and the world’s largest populations of leatherback and olive-ridley turtles also come here to nest.

The country is also home to over 10,000 plant species – 15 per cent unique to Gabon – more than the total diversity of all countries in West Africa.

Gabon is the most carbon-positive nation on the planet. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has documented its exceptionally high performance in removing almost 91 million tonnes of CO2 – more than it emits per year and equivalent to absorbing and offsetting 25 per cent of the UK’s annual emissions.

Along with the new brand, the French-speaking nation has also launched new dedicated social media channels, a marketing video and a destination website aimed at tourists.
