Sport and gender equality were brought into focus through an international lens last week as gender expert Professor Michael Kimmel participated in a boardroom conversation at Gilbert + Tobin with leading thinkers in the field.

At a time of unprecedented momentum for women in sport, an array of prominent business, sports, government and media professionals joined Gilbert + Tobin partners Danny Gilbert and Moya Dodd to address the gender gap in sport.

“Privilege is invisible to those who have it,” said Professor Kimmel, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at New York’s Stony Brook University.

“But once it is recognised, there are both challenges and opportunities in addressing it.”

Participants identified opportunities for all sectors in the Record of Discussions.

“Sport is profoundly influential in our culture, and the exclusion of women is a persistent injustice. Sports leaders, business and government want to move to the right side of history, but the barriers are complex and multiple,” said Moya, a former Matildas vice-captain.

“I hope that this gathering of expertise, and the insights generated, will help move the ball up the field for women in sport.”
