Did you know that National Measurement Institute, Australia is at the forefront of developing quantum standards to revolutionise energy calibration? Led by Dr Ilya Budovsky, NMI is pushing boundaries by leveraging quantum principles to create precise electrical waveforms known as Quantum Standards. But what exactly are quantum standards, and why are they important? Quantum standards enable us to calibrate electrical instruments with unparalleled accuracy, down to the smallest unit—the electron. This precision ensures that household appliances, like washing machines and microwaves, operate at peak efficiency, saving money on energy bills while reducing environmental impact. NMI’s research isn't limited to your home appliances. By integrating quantum standards into electrical measurements, NMI is unlocking possibilities across industries—from communications to healthcare. #WorldQuantumDay #NMIQuantum #EnergyCalibration #Sustainability #Innovation #NMIAustralia Find out more https://lnkd.in/gvdUZ7UV

Earlier this week representatives from the National Measurement Institute, Australia, Dr Michael Moawad and Stephanie Meoz King from NMI’s Chemical and Biological Metrology Branch, attended this year’s Forensic and Clinical Toxicology Association (FACTA) conference in Hobart, Tasmania. Both Michael and Stephanie were grateful for the experience to contribute and to learn from the ongoing progress being made in the toxicology field. FACTA plays a crucial role in promoting collaboration, sharing cutting-edge research, and advancing standards in toxicology. From forensic investigations, clinical applications and, in the case of NMI, the use of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). NMI makes these available to a range of laboratories providing the standards from which to be able to carry out a variety of forensic and clinical tests. To find out more about certified reference materials in the forensics space, visit https://bit.ly/NMI_CRMs

Are you getting everything you pay for when purchasing internationally packaged foods? National Measurement Institute, Australia Trade Measurement Inspectors will be conducting audits of retailers, wholesalers and importers of international foods from 18-22 March. The audit campaign will focus on retailers, wholesalers and importers who produce, import, and distribute seasonal produce, specialty food and grocery items sold in international food stores and grocers. Approximately 400 site visits will take place across Australia to make sure customers of all products imported and distributed in Australia are getting what they pay for. International wholesalers and retailers supply multicultural communities across Australia with a taste of home and provide access to a wide arrange of culinary delicacies. However, not all imported products may have gone through the same level of quality assurance testing as other products produced and or packed in Australia. NMI’s Trade Measurement inspectors will check products for measurement and marking accuracy and ensure that mistakes that may have occurred during the packaging process are identified. Inaccurate package labelling, content descriptions, and short measurement are often inadvertent however can significantly undercut value for money. Visit https://lnkd.in/gtxaGB8t to find out more.

Assistant Director Dr Thish de Silva from National Measurement Institute, Australia’s International Relations section is proud of the women who have come before her, admiring their strength and determination in creating what has become a more positive and inclusive workplace at NMI. Having a PhD in Biotechnology from RMIT University Thish sees her role as supporting the future direction of NMI although at times her inquisitive scientific nature catches her out and she finds herself wanting to delve deeper into the science NMI does. She believes that the best solutions to many of the challenges she faces in her role are solved through the diversity of opinions and experiences amongst her colleagues. This often brings out the best solutions to many problems or issues we face in our work.” Thish says, “I think we have come a long way in providing opportunities to women, making sure we are diverse and inclusive, but there is still more progress to be made. There are many incredible women in NMI who perform a wide range of scientific and technical tasks every day! We encourage everyone to celebrate women and their achievements, and work to empower women in your life or workplace. Join us in celebrating International Women’s Day. #CountHerIn #IWD2024 #March8 #IWD

Did you know motor oils used to be sold by volume at the service station? Weights and measures inspectors, today called Trade Measurement Officers, historically used 2 litre and 5 litre steel measurement jugs to test the accuracy of those measurements. Today, petrol pumps are tested by National Measurement Institute, Australia’s Trade Measurement Officers who use more modern tools to test the accuracy of these pumps. In much the same way as the weights and measures inspectors did before them, making sure we all get what we pay for. To recognise the work of these inspectors the NMI have loaned two of these historical measurement jugs to the #SpiritOfService exhibition being put on by the Australian Public Service at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in #Canberra.
