About Us

The Chapter 

ISPOR Sydney Student and ECR Chapter, established in 2020, provides opportunities for professional development and a platform for knowledge exchange and networking for students and early career researchers (ECRs) in health economics and outcomes research in Sydney. 

It is a registered component chapter of ISPOR and collaborates with other student chapters such as the ISPOR Victoria and Tasmania Student Chapter and the broader ISPOR Australia Chapter

The Chapter is composed of students and ECRs from University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, and Western Sydney University.

Executive Committee  

Nancy Kim - President

Nancy is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) and a Cancer Care Pharmacist. She has a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Sydney, a Dual Master of Public Health (in Economic Evaluation) and a Master of Health Management from the University of New South Wales. She has also recently completed a Master of Business Administration (Executive) at the Australian Graduate School of Management, UNSW. Nancy is currently working on a PhD where she is assessing long-term health outcomes and costs of allogeneic blood and marrow transplantation (BMT). Nancy has a keen interest in applied economic evaluation to inform clinical practice and maximise health outcomes. Nancy is uniquely placed in her training in health economics and clinical experience, where she aims to hold both the systems perspective and the perspective of individual patients. Through her research, Nancy aspired to inform and improve health services and the allocation of health care resources to achieve the best overall health outcomes for cancer patients and their carers. 

Akanksha Akanksha - President-elect

Akanksha is a second year PhD Candidate at CHERE, UTS. Her PhD research is part of an Australian Research Council grant (Equitable funding of health care resources: Integrating social outcomes into new policies). She joined CHERE in November 2021 and has worked on various projects since like the Australian discount rate review, EQ-5D-Y valuation study, and Australian HTA review. Her research interests include quality-of-life (QoL) measurement research and economic evaluation. Akanksha is the president-elect for the ISPOR NSW student and ECR chapter.

Rajan Sharma - Secretary 

Rajan is a postdoc research fellow at Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy (MUCHE). He did his PhD specializing in health economics in 2020 from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. His current research work focuses on health technology assessment of medical devices or pharmaceutical drugs and economic evaluations related to childhood and adult hearing and other health interventions. Rajan is the secretary for the ISPOR NSW student and ECR chapter.

Levina Chandra Khoe - Treasurer

Levina Chandra Khoe is a second year PhD candidate at the School of Population Health, University of New South Wales, Australia. Her ongoing dissertation project explores the underreporting of occupational diseases in Indonesia and analyses its economic impact. She has an MPH from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a medical doctor degree from the University of Indonesia. She is also a lecturer at the Department of Community Medicine, University of Indonesia. Since 2015, she has been involved in doing health technology assessment studies to provide evidence-based policy recommendations for the Ministry of Health.

Faculty Advisor

Associate Professor Brendan Mulhern

Brendan Mulhern is an Associate Professor of Health Economics and Outcomes Research. He also leads the Cancer Australia funded Cancer Quality of Life Expert Support Team (CQUEST). He joined CHERE, UTS in January 2015, and completed his PhD in August 2020. His research expertise is in the development and assessment of preference and non-preference-based measures using innovative psychometric and valuation methods including item response theory, discrete choice experiments and time trade off. This includes the development of updated versions of the two most widely used preference-based measures internationally (the EQ-5D and the SF-6D). He also has expertise in the development and testing of health state valuation methods. He has led the development of condition specific measures for use in the assessment of health interventions. This includes instruments to assess quality of life in dementia, epilepsy, and diabetes. Brendan is the president-elect for the ISPOR Australia chapter.

General Members  

Elena Keller (Founding President)

Elena is a Health Economist specializing in the analysis of linked administrative health datasets to provide evidence on whether treatments provide good value for money. Currently, she is a Research Associate and PhD Student within the National Perinatal Epidemiology and Statistics Unit (NPESU) at the Centre for Big Data Research in Health (CBDRH), UNSW Medicine & Health. Her PhD project focusses on an economic valuation of fertility treatments. Prior to this role, Elena obtained a Bachelor's degree in Nutritional Sciences (Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany) and a Master's degree in Health Economics (University of Queensland, Australia). 

Anthony Sunjaya 

Dr Anthony Sunjaya is a medical doctor from Indonesia and Research Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, UNSW Sydney, Australia. His research focuses on chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, primary care strengthening, digital health including clinical AI, health systems and research-to-policy translation. Antonio Canale  

Antonio is a Research Fellow at the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy (MUCHE). His research expertise includes systematic reviews, clinical trials, and cost-effectiveness analysis using microsimulation models, as well as trial-based analyses. He holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Technology Sydney and a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. As a pharmacist, he worked in different settings, developing his career in primary public healthcare. Here, he had the opportunity to collaborate in the development of a professional pharmacy service, which later became his PhD. With his experience, Antonio is now working in health technology assessment for the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) and Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC). He is also participating in applied research in the economic evaluation of professional pharmacy services.

Allen Nazareno 

Allen is an assistant professor in Mathematics at the University of the Philippines Los Baños and a PhD candidate at the School of Population Health at the University of New South Wales. His research mainly focuses on predictive analytics and mathematical modelling of biological/chemical systems.  For his PhD, he is currently working on the application of statistical modelling in disease burden estimation and mathematical modelling of disease transmission. He is also working on the economic evaluation of potential interventions against infectious diseases.
