Falling Walls Engage is the global platform for Science Engagement hosted by the Falling Walls Foundation and supported by the Hannover Re Foundation.
We believe that public trust and involvement in science play a central role in addressing global challenges, achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and contributing to the overall well-being of society. Our mission is to connect and support established and emerging Science Engagement stakeholders to generate mutual benefits for science and communities worldwide.
We showcase successful Science Engagement projects and inspire knowledge transfer within a global, inclusive, and supportive community. We create unique opportunities for exchange, collaboration, and capacity building for current and future practitioners, as well as institutions and the public. We strive to embed Science Engagement at an institutional level and establish it as an asset to any scientific career.
SCIENCE BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR 2024
Apple Pu Yi Chui - Breaking the Wall to Engage Schools in Coral Restoration
Apple Pui Yi Chui addresses climate change by conserving coral reefs threatened by warming oceans and environmental degradation. Schools are turned into coral nurseries where students care for fragments later transplanted into the ocean by researchers, fostering hands-on environmental stewardship. Her project Coral Nursery aims to raise awareness, encourage marine-friendly lifestyles, and build a lasting connection with nature through education and direct conservation work.
What is Science Engagement?
We define Science Engagement as activities, events, or interactions bridging the gap between science and society to generate mutual learning and benefits across the spectrum of public engagement and interactive science communication.
Engagement is a two-way process aimed at shaping and co-creating scientific processes, and promoting active community involvement in scientific knowledge production.
At Falling Walls Engage, we embrace participatory formats at all levels: from co-productive research and public panels to arts-driven or entertaining approaches – the common goal is inclusion and impact on all involved parties.
At Falling Walls Engage, we are not just breaking walls between science and society but bringing together communities all over the world.

FALLING WALLS SCIENCE SUMMIT
The most innovative Science Engagement projects will be presented at the Falling Walls Science Summit, which will take place in Berlin from 7 to 9 November 2025. The prestigious science conference has been organised by the Falling Walls Foundation since 2009 and established itself as an international forum for world-leading scientists focused on scientific breakthroughs. Through its numerous projects, including Falling Walls Engage, the Falling Walls Foundation is to bridge the gap between the potential of science and addressing the paramount challenges of our time, bringing it closer to the public.
