If you are a regular driver along SH58, you’ll know that safety improvements being made between Mount Cecil Road and Harris Road are well underway.

Mount Cecil Road to Harris Road

Work is progressing very well, with the retaining wall now completed. We’ve also strengthened the road using a technique called foam bitumen stabilisation (FBS) and new chip seal has been put down. The chip seal will be bedded in for a few months before the team come back and put on the final layer of ashphalt.

Stormwater culvert east of Mount Cecil Road

You might not be aware as you can’t see it from the road, but the team is still working to complete the large stormwater culvert east of Mount Cecil Road.

The culvert runs under the full width of SH58 and connects with the storm water network.

This is a significant and challenging piece of work.

Harris Road to Transmission Gully Interchange

With this work now well underway, we are turning our focus to the next stage of safety improvements along SH58 between Harris Road and the new Transmission Gully interchange. We are working on the planning phase for these parts of the project.

The improvements in this area will include:

  • Roundabouts at the Moonshine Road and the Murphys/Flightys Road intersections
  • Widening the road, adding sealed shoulders and side barriers
  • Installing median barriers for the entire length of the road.

We are investigating whether some work can be brought forward, by seeking early approvals for road widening and safety barriers between Harris Road and east of Moonshine Road.

The roundabouts will require more complex approvals, and some additional land to be purchased. We expect to lodge applications late this year and start construction in 2023 if consents are approved.
