Fixed restrictions, Waimatuku Flat Road
Fixed restrictions, Waimatuku Flat Road
Southland District Council has fixed restrictions of axle 1000kg and gross 3500kg weight limits for heavy motor vehicles on Waimatuku Flat Road.
The above limits apply to ‘through’ heavy traffic movements only from 27 January 2022. Limited heavy vehicle movements for the operation of farms situated on Waimauku Flat Road will still be permitted.
The restriction is necessary to protect Waimatuku Flat Road from excessive damage due to heavy motor vehicles using this road as a detour for the weight-restricted bridge on Argyle Otahuti Road (the railway overbridge situated in Waianiwa). An appropriate detour will be signed for heavy vehicles via Waianiwa Oporo Road, Oporo Flat Road and Lincoln Road.

Road closed, Channel Road, Tussock Creek

Southland District Council advises that Channel Road, Tussock Creek, is closed to through traffic, effective immediately. The gantries that prevented heavy vehicles from crossing the bridge over the Makarewa River have been illegally removed, and it appears that heavy vehicles have been using the bridge, which was open to light vehicle use only.

Gorge Road Invercargill Highway pavement rehabilitation
Gorge Road Invercargill Highway pavement rehabilitation
Wilson Contracting will be completing pavement rehabilitation on a section of Gorge Road between Faulker Road and Ashers Road. Initial drainage work will begin the week of 12 February, followed by pavement reconstruction of the road and sealing in March/April. Road users should expect delays to their journeys while this work is underway.
There will be temporary speed limits and traffic signals in place, reducing Gorge Road-Invercargill Highway to one lane in this area while this drainage work is underway (between 6.30am and 7pm weekdays). Access to residences will remain, though there may be occasional delays if crews are working in the immediate area at the time.

Weight limit, Waianiwa rail overbridge
Weight limit, Waianiwa rail overbridge
A structural assessment of the Waianiwa rail overbridge on Argyle Otahuti Road indicates the structure is nearing the end of its life.
To prolong the life of the bridge until it can be replaced, Southland District Council is posting a 3,500kg weight limit on it, which means it can be used by light vehicles only.
Private vehicles up to the size of a ute and trailer will still be able to cross the bridge safely. Signage advising of the posting will be installed.
A detour for heavier vehicles is available via Waianiwa Oporo Road, Oporo Flat Road and Lincoln Road.
We expect these restrictions to remain in place until a new bridge can be constructed. Although the overbridge was not previously posted it was earmarked for replacement within the next 10 years. We anticipate bringing the replacement forward and completing this work within the next 24 months.
