Tena koutou,

Welcome to the March update on the Elizabeth Street upgrade. Underground renewals are progressing well and we're excited to move into autumn with the streetscape upgrade commencing in the next few months. Here’s the latest news on how we’re progressing with the project and what to expect next.

Wastewater and water upgrades

Works to upgrade water and wastewater pipes have commenced at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council end of Elizabeth Street, progressively moving towards Cameron Road.

The first couple of weeks of work have included constructing new wastewater connections from property boundaries to the centre of the road, in readiness for drilling the new wastewater pipe. Some of these works take place during the day and other works at night in order to minimise impacts on businesses, customers, residents and others driving through the city centre.

Footpaths, driveways and the road will remain open during works. However, there may be some stop/go in place for short periods of time. Intermittent road closures are possible at nights, between 8.30pm and 6am. There will be restrictions to all right turning traffic at the Devonport/Elizabeth Street intersection at night, and some bus routes will need to take a different route through the area.

Bus routes servicing Grey Street will be rerouted down Durham Street. A bus stop will be serviced outside 146 Durham Street to temporarily replace the bus stop outside 96 Grey Street. Signage for bus users will be in place and latest service updates can be found at www.baybus.co.nz. Waste water and water upgrades are due to be completed in mid-2021.

The tree located in the Grey Street roundabout will be removed tonight, to enable drilling of the wastewater pipe and in preparation for the streetscape upgrade. To minimise disruption, we will replant later in the year as part of the wider streetscape upgrade. The tree removal is part of the wider streetscape upgrade on Elizabeth Street, including a wider footpath on Elizabeth Street (between Devonport Road and Grey Street roundabout), approximately 40 trees, landscaping, street furniture, and places to rest and socialise.

Streetscape upgrade

Detailed design of the streetscape upgrade has been completed and streetscape works are expected to start on First Avenue in autumn, moving to Elizabeth Street once the wastewater and water upgrades have been completed. Streetscape works are timed to complete with the Farmers development, currently planned for the end of 2021.

Shiree is sending out weekly email updates to the businesses and residents immediately adjacent to the works.
