Dr. John Phamnguyen

Dr John Phamnguyen is a General Neurologist and subspecialist Epileptologist based in Brisbane, Queensland.

Following completion of his medical training at Griffith University in Queensland, Dr Phamnguyen undertook specialist neurology training in Sydney before obtaining his Fellowship in Neurology from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Dr Phamnguyen trained extensively in epilepsy during his fellowship at Westmead Hospital, one of the largest comprehensive epilepsy centres in Australia. Working at Westmead, Dr Phamnguyen gained extensive experience in the management and assessment of complex refractory epilepsies. These assessments included surgical evaluation with intracranial EEG monitoring and multimodal neuroimaging processing.

Research is an important aspect of Dr Phamnguyen’s practice. He has presented his research work at national and overseas conferences. Dr Phamnguyen is currently undertaking a PhD at the Centre for Advanced Imaging with the University of Queensland to understand about seizure networks in epilepsy using advanced imaging techniques. Dr Phamnguyen hopes to uncover what structures and networks in the brain are responsible for focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (secondarily generalisation).

Dr Phamnguyen provides neurology consultation for a broad range of neurological disorders. His subspecialist interests include the management of complex epilepsies and advanced neuroimaging techniques. Dr Phamnguyen is accredited by the EEG and Clinical Neurophysiology Committee (EEGCNC) of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN) as a Level 3 EEG supervisor and is involved in EEG teaching through local and international courses and workshops. Dr Phamnguyen is an active member of the Epilepsy Society of Australia (ESA), Young Epilepsy Section (YES-ILAE) of the International League Against Epilepsy, American Epilepsy Society (AES) and Asian-Epilepsy Society (ASEPA).

Dr Phamnguyen has public appointments with the Comprehensive Epilepsy Department at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Epilepsy Unit at Mater Hospital Brisbane and private appointments at the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Phamnguyen is currently not able to accept new private referrals.

Dr Phamnguyen provides private consultations at the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre (BCNC) located at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Phamnguyen provides public consultations and epilepsy presurgical evaluations with the Comprehensive Epilepsy Service at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the Epilepsy Unit at Mater Hospital Brisbane .
