Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested by the FBI on July 2, 2020, and was held in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Centre.

The jail is considered one of the toughest in America and has been described as a "hellhole".

Maxwell requested a retrial after it emerged that one of the jurors had been sexually abused but had falsely stated before the trial that he had not been.

But on April 1, 2022, this retrial request was thrown out.

Ahead of her sentencing, it was reported that Maxwell was put on suicide watch despite a letter submitted by Bobbi Sternheim to US District Judge Alison Nathan that emphasised that her client was "not suicidal."

Sternheim claimed that Maxwell was "abruptly removed" from the general population and put in solitary confinement "without having conducted a psychological evaluation and without justification".

She added that Maxwell was given a "suicide smock" to wear - a large piece of thick, tough fabric which can't be cut, torn, twisted, or otherwise fashioned into a noose.

On June 28, 2022, Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in the minimum-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, and a fine of $750,000 (£615,000).

After her sentencing, it was announced that Maxwell will be given treatment in prison for the "trauma" she suffered and will be removed from solitary confinement.

She will have up to 500 hours of therapy and have access to a psychologist and a social worker in the prison she's being transferred to.

Her cell will be a marked improvement from her previous one which she complained was filthy.

Prison consultant Justin Paperny told The Times: "She's been in this wretched, dank, cold, filthy detention centre in Brooklyn which has really conditioned her for confinement.

"“She’s really endured the worst of what prison can offer — in solitary confinement, dealing with Covid and quarantine and arguably the worst detention centre in America.

“People are surprised to hear that once she is sentenced and makes her way to the federal correctional institution, she will actually feel like she’s in Disneyland compared to where she is now."

What is Ghislaine Maxwell's association with Jeffrey Epstein?

Maxwell dated Jeffrey Epstein on and off for a number years but maintained a close professional relationship managing his homes in Florida and the British Virgin Islands.

Epstein paid Maxwell at least $30.7million during the time they were associated, according to bank records presented in court.

This is understood to be in return for Maxwell acting as his madam, acquiring young girls for sex with the now dead paedophile.

Throughout Maxwell's trial her accusers talked of the the playful, intimate, almost adolescent nature of her relationship with Epstein.

Two of the four women to testify described how the pair would laugh and fool around with each other like teenagers.

Accuser Annie Farmer testified that when she flew to Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico in 1996 they were acting flirtatiously towards each other during a trip to the movies to see Primal Fear.

She said: “Epstein and Maxwell were being very playful with each other, kind of grabbing each other."

Prosecutors portrayed their intimate relationship as an essential part of Epstein’s and Maxwell’s alleged predatory behaviour, as they partnered in luring young victims in to be sexually abused.

Epstein reportedly required sex "three times a day" according to Cosmopolitan, with Maxwell ensuring this was fulfilled.

The paedophile killed himself in a Manhattan prison cell in 2019, while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

What happened during Ghislaine Maxwell's trial?

Maxwell was accused of recruiting and grooming four teenagers for Epstein to sexually abuse between 1994 and 2004 at his various properties across the world.

She was convicted in New York in December 2021 of trafficking girls for the late American financier.

Many of the women who testified during Maxwell's trial alleged they were taught to give Epstein "massages", which led to sex.

A multitude of photos were released during trial depicting the relationship between Epstein and Maxwell, showing them to be affectionate with one another, with Maxwell being nude in some of the photographs.

Maxwell was found guilty of recruiting underage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein.

Following the conviction Maxwell's lawyers demanded a retrial after claiming an unfair trial because a juror - identified by his first and middle names, Scotty David - had been a victim of sexual abuse himself but stated the contrary.

A US judge upheld Maxwell's sex trafficking conviction, denying her bid for a new trial.

When asked why he failed to disclose his past in the jury questionnaire when explicitly asked, he said it was an "inadvertent mistake" and "flew through" the document without properly reading it.

Are Scott Borgerson and Ghislaine Maxwell married?

During a court hearing on July 15, 2021, it was revealed that Maxwell was secretly married in 2016.

But by the time of Maxwell's trial it is understood the marriage was over.

The shocking revelation came as she pleaded not guilty via video link.

The anonymous marriage was disclosed by US Attorney Alison Moe, one of three prosecutors on the case, at the detention hearing on Tuesday, July 14.

She spoke about the lack of transparency in Maxwell's filings and asked who would co-sign her bond if she was given bail.

Ms Moe said: "In addition to failing to describe in any way the absence of proposed co-signers of a bond, the defendant also makes no mention whatsoever about the financial circumstances or assets of her spouse whose identity she declined to provide to Pretrial Services.

"There's no information about who will be co-signing this bond or their assets, and no details whatsoever."

Reports later confirmed that the mystery man was tech company CEO Scott Borgerson.

Borgerson, the boss of CargoMetrics, is believed to be worth around $100million.

He allegedly married Maxwell in 2016, but the British socialite allegedly tried to file for a divorce before her arrest so her husband wouldn’t suffer from "being associated with her".

The tech CEO was previously linked to the $1million New Hampshire mansion where Maxwell was snared by the FBI.

He has always denied their relationship, saying they are just old friends.
