Chorus Cabinet art

Unleash the ‘Dad bod’, grab the snags, the budgie smugglers and the fill the chilly bin, a NZ Summer is only just around the corner! This bright and fun concept visually catalogues everything needed for a big day mucking around at the beach. The character was referenced from some of the great moustache enthusiasts of our time, Burt Reynolds, Nick Cummins (the Honey Badger) and my Dad.

This cabinet is right next to Parnell Library, so I painted a wise old ruru (morepork) digging through a stack of owl-related books. (They’re all real books, too!)

The Buzzy Bee toy is an iconic children’s toy in New Zealand and has a timeless appeal. I chose to depict this collector’s item because of my love for kiwiana. Painted using spray paint, this piece really brightens the area. Buzzy also turns 80 this year and, along with other classic wooden toys, was originally developed by entrepreneur Maurice Schlesinger in late 1939 and early 1940s.

Russell Street leads steeply uphill from what was once the old port of Nelson. Originally it was an area servicing the wharf and providing housing for port employees. Fortunately it still contains some of the original cottages and villas and I was able therefore to include these in my depiction of the historic street.

My design for this project was fun energetic and bright, but with a message about our responsibility for the planet. We are the custodians of the planet, from the land to the seas. Our responsibility reaches far beyond our needs and more towards the importance of the creatures great and small that inhabit the earth beside us.

This swan mural sits on the same road as a family managed farm, so I was so excited to be able to paint this mural. I love Pauatahanui and all of the incredible birdlife around the inlet.

This design captures the some of the wildlife and beauty of Island Bay on Wellington’s south coast. The Milky Way over ocean waves on the side panel is a nod to the spectacular astrophotography produced along the coast.

This cabinet is located at a busy turnoff, with lots of children and people around. I thought let’s have some fun. It can be viewed from three sides, so I made a fun image of animals eating a discarded pizza. No waste when there are animals there to enjoy. 

My design aims to encourage children and adults alike to form or nurture an interest in New Zealand native birds and the conservation work that takes place with and around them.

I was inspired by the area this cabinet is located, as it is in front of a child care centre. You can view it from every side. My design is a bit of fun, featuring animals unwrapping a gift box of a giant teddy. The cabinet has been turned into a gift box with wrapping paper and a ribbon around the whole cabinet, and animals all over helping to see what’s inside.
