Fundamentals of Surfing: Bringing Science to Surf Webinar
This evidence-informed webinar will present information related to the sport of surfing. Specifically, topics covered will include paddling performance, breath holding, common surfing injuries and coaching essentials. The presenters will deliver their synthesis of the scientific literature and share their professional experiences that will further your understanding of: how to improve paddling performance; breath holding physiology and drills you can use to improve CO2 tolerance; recognising common surfing injuries and strategies to mitigate risk; and, approaches to effective coaching that will increase athlete ‘buy-in’ and program adherence. The take-home messages from this seminar can be implemented in your coaching or own personal pursuits.

Presented by Dr Steven Duhig PhD

Dr Steven Duhig is a Lecturer and researcher at Griffith University, Gold Coast. He currently convenes Sports Coaching and Exercise Prescription and Programming 2 with his research focussing on sports performance and injury prevention. Steven is also a Strength and Conditioning Coach with Griffith University’s swim squad and rugby 7s program.

Presented by Mr Pere Campistol

Pere Campistol Agustí is a graduated dentist and sport scientist. He moved to Australia from Spain to follow his passion of contributing to the surf community by researching and developing training programs to enhance performance and mitigate the risk of surf injuries. He’s been working as a surf coach and training surfers using dry-land techniques for more than two years. He is also interested on breathing techniques and enhancing surfer’s capacity to postpone the urge to breath, getting them both physically and mentally ready to surf in bigger conditions.
