March 2022 | In this edition

Welcome to the first edition of the South Australian Healthy Workplaces newsletter for 2022! We've started the year once again navigating work life in a pandemic. For some of us, this may include bouts of home schooling, time off work due to isolation or quarantine requirements, ongoing working from home arrangements, or perhaps back into the office but with stricter protocols in place with regards to mask wearing and social distancing. The Healthy Workplaces team will continue to support you this year in creating healthier, safer, and thriving workplaces, as we look to further develop our resources, communications, and provide training opportunities that meet your needs.

Protecting your business from COVID-19

As we learn to live with COVID and continue to work through the challenges of new variants and outbreaks, managing the risks is important for the future of your business and safety of your people. Your workplace plays an important role in the prevention of harm to your people and, by extension, the broader community.  If unprepared, one positive case in your workplace could send your entire workforce into quarantine, or worse, become infected. This could leave your business financially vulnerable.

COVID infection is a reasonably foreseeable risk. This means that you must consider the risks of COVID exposure as part of your duty of care as an employer. The best and most effective method of meeting this obligation is to perform a risk assessment, as per the following steps:
  • Perform a risk assessment
For example, consider what is the risk of exposure (from internal and external sources such as your customers), what are the risks of transmission, and what Government regulations apply to you and your industry.
  • Apply the appropriate controls
Once you have identified your risks, put some controls in place using the hierarchy of controls: Elimination, substitution, isolation, engineering, administrative and PPE (personal protective equipment).
  • PPE (personal protective equipment) considerations
PPE is the last line of defence when there are no other practical or effective ways to eliminate risk; but there are a number of important considerations for using PPE that will help ensure it works as intended
  • Keeping records
Keeping records of your risk management process will demonstrate your compliance with work health and safety legislation, and help monitor the health and safety performance of your business.

A Walk Can Work Wonders

Wellbeing SA recently launched the “A Walk can Work Wonders” campaign, which highlights ways to incorporate walking into our busy lives, including walking to work.
Did you know that breaking up prolonged periods of sitting with a short walk is better for your health than standing breaks? As we increasingly transition back to working in the office, there is an opportunity for employers to create a walking culture within their workplaces.

Creating a walking culture within your workplace can be as simple as encouraging employees to use active transport to get to work, to organise walking meetings where feasible, or promoting walking during lunch breaks. If you want to do something more, you could organise a once-off or more regular step challenges through the 10,000 Steps Team tournament website.
To coincide with the campaign, there is no better time to embed a culture of walking into your workplace than now.

For more information including tips to incorporate more activity across your day, visit the Wellbeing SA Website.

This meta-review on psychosocial work exposures and health outcomes found the associations between psychosocial work factors, cardiovascular diseases and mental disorders were generally significant, and the magnitude was stronger for mental disorders than for cardiovascular diseases. Significant associations were found between job strain and long working hours as exposures, and coronary heart diseases, (ischemic) stroke, and depression as outcomes.

Hospitality has been one of the hardest hit sectors during the pandemic. New research from the University of South Australia shows that even with an end to lockdowns, social distancing requirements are adding to the stress and difficulty faced by many people working in service roles.

This new study published in The Journal of Service Theory and Practice, shows the challenges of adhering to social distancing requirements – and concerns about potential consequences of not doing so – are taking a heavy mental toll on many hospitality workers, eroding job satisfaction and increasing intention to leave the industry.

This systematic review concluded that light walking may be better for cardiometabolic health indicators (e.g. postprandial glucose, systolic blood pressure, postprandial insulin) than standing to break up prolonged sitting in a free-living setting e.g. workplace environment.
