4 Day Private Tour Tasmania Wildlife Encounter

Day 1: Mt Field National Park

Guests will be met by their expert local guide before venturing into Mount Field National Park, the oldest National Park in Tasmania. The landscapes are diverse, ranging from lush eucalyptus temperate rainforests to alpine moorland. Guides will provide interpretation along the rainforest walk to Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls and the Tall Trees, some of the tallest trees in the world.

This cool temperate rainforest allows guests the opportunity to search for some of Tasmanians 12 endemic bird species including Scrubtit, Black Currawong and Tasmanian Thornbill. After lunch, there an opportunity to observe the unique duck bill and webbed feet of Platypus in the wild. This semiaquatic, egg-laying monotreme is endemic to eastern Australia including Tasmania and is a recognisable and iconic symbol of Australia.

Day 2: Tasman Peninsula

Boarding an award winning cruise, guests will explore waterfalls, sea cliffs, archways and deep sea caves that host an abundance of marine wildlife including Australian Fur Seals, migrating Humpback Whales (seasonal) as well as Common and Bottlenose Dolphins.

As the cruise ventures into the Southern Ocean taking in the historic and famous Tasman Island, pelagic species of sea birds can be spotted including Shy, Wandering and Black-browed Albatross, Short-tailed and Sooty Shearwaters, Australasian Gannets and White-bellied Sea Eagles.

After lunch, guests will check into accommodation for the night nestled between a beautiful beach and forest. This also provides the opportunity to further explore the Tasman Peninsula in search of wallabies, possums, White-bellied Sea Eagles and Black-faced Cormorants.

Day 3: Freycinet, Wineglass Bay & Bicheno

Upon leaving the Tasman Peninsula, guests will be captivated by a scenic drive passing coastal fishing villages along the stunning east coast, before arriving at the renowned Freycinet Peninsula; with its exceptional beauty, pristine white sandy beaches and granite coastline. A stop at the internationally significant RAMSAR wetland, Moulting Lagoon, provides the opportunity to observe important breeding grounds for various waterfowl and wetland birds, and a destination for migratory birds.

An expert guide will lead an interpreted walk to the world famous Wineglass Bay, bound to provide spectacular photo opportunities. In the evening, a night tour offers guests the rare chance to observe Little Penguins, as they make their way from the ocean to their burrows and rookery.

Day 4: Hobart

After a relaxed morning continue back to Hobart where your guide will transfer you to the Hobart Airport or accommodation.

Citizen Science with Premier Travel Tasmania

Premier Travel Tasmania contributes observations of flora & fauna via iNaturalist, the world’s leading global social biodiversity network. This platform allows our team to create research-quality citizen science data that enables a more detailed picture of our national biodiversity, and assists bodies such as the CSIRO, ecologists and other decision makers to deliver better outcomes for the environment and our species.

Our guides record observations with iNaturalist Australia by using the iNaturalist app on mobile phones or desktop computers. An observation records an encounter with an individual organism at a particular time and location on Kangaroo Island. We require photos to be attached to observations for them to become research grade and added to the Atlas of Living Australia.

This is where you can greatly assist us in capturing images out in the field! Although we make broader observations that we think are valuable to the local scientific community, we have identified the following species to track when we are exploring Tasmania by vehicle or on foot.

Wildlife Rescue Training in Tasmania

All guides at Premier Travel Tasmania undertake Wildlife Rescue Training, given the high incidence of road collisions with native wildlife across Tasmania. Bonorong Wildlife Rescue provides training for guides covering wildlife rescue and transport procedures, to provide the best chance to save injured or orphaned wildlife that may be spotted when out touring on Tasmanian roads.

Premier Travel Tasmania is also a founding partner of Friends of Bonorong, assisting in fundraising for the immediate care of wildlife in need and the ongoing protection of Tasmanian species. Guests travelling on shared wildlife departures contribute to this effort, with a portion of the tour cost going towards the Bonorong medical facility and education of guests with a behind the scenes night tour of their facility.

Developing Partnerships To Meet Sustainability Goals

Premier Travel Tasmania has developed partnerships with key environmental organisations in Tasmania, including Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service, Friends of Bonorong, Wombat Rescue Tasmania, Devils@Cradle and Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Program. Friends of Bonorong, Devils@Cradle and Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Program are all supported financially via touring experiences provided by Premier Travel Tasmania.
