UN warns Yemen at risk of unprecedented famine

The United Nations' aid chief has sounded the alarm that half the population of war-torn Yemen could soon be on the brink of famine.

A UN assessment in September estimated that 11 million people face "pre-famine conditions" and require aid to survive. The number has since been revised to 14 million.

Mark Lowcock warned the famine would be "much bigger than anything any professional in this field has seen during their working lives".
