Our Mum, Robyn Harvey is fighting Melanoma.
In 2013, at the age of 52, Melanoma was found in one of her femur bones. The cancer had attacked the bone leaving only a fragile shell behind. This bone had to be removed and replaced in a major operation which also included a complete hip replacement. Once all the Melanoma had been removed and bones replaced, Robyn faced a long road to full recovery, having to learn how to use her leg again.
She underwent a similar operation only twelve months later to remove Melanoma from her knee on the other leg. At this point she was cancer free. From then on Robyn had to have regular scans done to check if the cancer had returned. For over 5 years there were no signs of Melanoma in her body.
However, in early 2019, the Melanoma returned in multiple locations around her body. Initially Anti- mutation drugs were successful in fighting the spread of the Melanoma. However, by late 2019 the anti-mutation drugs had stopped working. She subsequently began Immunotherapy treatment and Radiation for the next few months. During this time the Immunotherapy drugs caused very significant side effects, which meant she spent plenty of time in hospital.
So now, at the young age of 60, after enduring severe side effects for 3 months, she had a scan and it was revealed that the Immunotherapy had not been successful. The cancer has continued to spread. Unbelievably her doctors have said that there is nothing further they can do for her in Australia.
There are however, alternative treatment options overseas which have been very successful in cases similar to hers. Germany is a leader in Clinical Trials so without having any other options in Australia she has decided to travel to Germany to undergo this treatment. The treatment is very expensive, with each round of treatment costing in excess of $75,000. Being overseas none of her treatment will be covered by health funds or any funding in Australia.
Before Cancer, Robyn was a teacher, ending up as a high school Principal, working very long hours. She loved her job and was very dedicated. She worked hard to help the students, parents, teachers and everyone in her school community. Cancer saw her retire, but through her hard work she had set herself up ready for retirement where she could travel and spend more time doing what she loves. Sadly, now, without this treatment that could all be taken away. At this point there are no other options so she is spending what money she has to get the treatment started.
That’s where your help comes in! She needs help to cover not only the expensive treatment costs in Germany but also travel and accommodation whilst there. At this stage we are not certain of how many rounds of treatment will be required. She will run out of money as the treatment goes on, so any contribution big or small that you could donate would be greatly appreciated by her, us and all of the family.
