Research
Academic research, powered by pioneering software. We’re making sense of digital for science and scholarship.
About us
The Netherlands eScience Center is the national center of excellence for the development and application of research software to advance academic research. We are convinced that research in every academic discipline can be improved by taking advantage of available digital technology. We take a multidisciplinary approach, combining our deep knowledge of both academic research and software development to help define and solve research challenges. We share our ideas and the tools we develop. Together with a wide range of partner organizations, we advance not just our research projects, but the state of academic research in general. In 2015 we developed our strategy for the coming years, which you can download here: Netherlands eScience Center Strategy 2015-2020. The eScience Center is a joint initiative of the Dutch national research council (NWO) and the Dutch organisation for ICT in education and research (SURF).

Today is that strange day, again. We moved our clocks an hour forward, and for a couple of days everything will feel weird. Why we do this? I'll try to visually explain it with this #rstats visual simulation: https://lnkd.in/dYftyb-Q Much more context in this piece I wrote for the Netherlands eScience Center blog: https://lnkd.in/eQuvuJW #DaylightSavingTime

We published the long-awaited report on Professionalizing the role of Research Software Engineers in the Netherlands! Thanks to Pamela Wochner, Margriet Miedema, Julie Beardsell DPhil, Jill Briggeman, Thomas Abeel, Marta Teperek, Dan Rudmann, PhD, Martine de Vos for their hard work! And thanks to the Society of Research Software Engineering and Research Data Management community for their feedback and input! The report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dRXZ9wNd. Spread the word to anyone who may benefit from or want to boost RSE professionalization! Main points: - RSEs are embedded in Dutch research institutions in different ways. Some have permanent contracts, others worry about job security and career progression. - If we want more security for RSEs in these positions, we need to make funders, policy makers and institutional management aware of the importance of RSEs. - RSEs do work that is in line with the strategic goals and mission of all research-performing organizations that we looked at in the report. If you are interested in working on the issues of sustainable funding and standardized job profiles for RSEs in the future, please fill out this form: https://lnkd.in/d5RGDTUZ We would love to strengthen the community further!
