This week we acknowledge National Reconciliation week, a time for us all to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year's theme of Now More than Ever ties in wonderfully with the success we have seen at the opening of the Palm Island Community Company Limited, as we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and future. The centre is an initiative of Queensland's Digital Economy Strategy and the Advance Queensland Deadly Innovation Strategy and operates in partnership with the Queensland Government Customer and Digital Group to increase economic opportunities and independence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through greater involvement in the innovation economy 👏 The centre has created jobs, digital career opportunities and independence for the local community and is the second activation of the First Nations Community Digital Transformation Project and follows the opening of the Cherbourg Service Centre; the first digital service centre to operate in a remote Indigenous community 🙌 The Palm Island Community Company (PICC) is a community-controlled entity that manages the centre and is responsible for recruiting and supporting staff. PICC CEO Rachel Atkinson said there is potential to expand the First Nations digital service centre operations on Palm Island and elsewhere stating “The centre is an excellent employment opportunity for people on Palm Island. It is a new industry and has the potential to create an exciting career pathway. There is a huge sense of pride in the people working in the digital service centre and the broader community.” To learn more about this wonderful initiative 👉 https://bit.ly/3Ko1DEp #AdvanceQueensland #DeadlyInnovation #NRW2024

A groundbreaking world first 🕷 Is spider venom the solution to controlling locusts? 🙌🦗 Watch how Dr Shaodong Guo, a molecular biologist and an AQ Industry Research Fellowship program recipient, conducts research on a groundbreaking project at the University of the Sunshine Coast that has the potential to revolutionise locust control in Queensland. 🤯👏 Australian plague locusts have the ability to cause severe damage to crops and pastures, having one of the greatest economic impacts in Queensland due to the extent and frequency of outbreaks. Thanks to $240,000 funding support from our Industry Research Fellowship program, Dr Guo’s innovative project aims to develop environmentally friendly bioinsecticides derived from spider venom peptides. Current control methods rely heavily on chemical insecticides, raising concerns about endangerment of non-target species including honeybees, environmental pollution and the development of insecticide resistance in locusts. Ignite Ideas recipient Cub Care received $100,000 in funding to expand their virtual paediatric clinic back in 2022 👏 Co-founder, Chris Horwill, believes the support and funding was a game-changer in promoting the innovative service more widely, “the Ignite Ideas funding was exactly what we needed to help bring the service to more Queenslanders". Cub Care connects patients to a virtual ward where specialist paediatric doctors provide expert care and support and makes it easier for families to access paediatric healthcare that empowers families to receive the medical attention they need from the convenience of their own home. The service recently passed its 10,000th patient milestone and has been well received by parents living in regional and rural areas where residents may live a long way from their local GP or hospital. With over 60 per cent of patients under the age of two, has helped reduce the disproportionate amount of emergency department presentations. In addition to their Urgent Care Clinic, Cub Care also offers baby and toddler general paediatrics and perinatal support.
