Paul will discuss a new attack called Repo Swatting identified in major SCM providers including GitHub, GitLab, and Gitea. He identified the attack and theorized that it could be weaponized to take developer resources offline. He was correct. Swatting is a terrible practice as it allows malicious attackers to target unsuspecting, innocent people by using law enforcement as a directed weapon. The Federal Government has announced it wants to shake up how HECS debts are indexed. What does this mean? Currently, around 3 million Australians have student loans, with the average debt sitting at $26,500. The proposed measure is set to reduce each student's outstanding HECS/HELP debt by approximately $1,200 this year. What are the proposed changes? The upcoming Federal Budget will introduce a significant reform to HECS and HELP loans to prevent student debts from outpacing wage growth. The reform proposes capping the indexation rate of these loans to the lower of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or the Wage Price Index (WPI). Pending legislative approval, this change would be applied retroactively from June 1, 2023, reversing last year’s indexation rate of 7.1%. This ensures a fairer and more sustainable approach to managing student debt. Will the proposed changes become law? WASM: MECE is thrilled to announce that five individual projects from our researchers were successful in receiving funding from the Australian Research Council, as part of the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme. The recipients of the DECRA grant from WASM: MECE were Dr Yijun Zhong, Dr Daqin Guan (both pictured below), Dr Huan Li, Dr Yongqiang Chen and Dr Qiucheng Xu who were each awarded between $417,000 and $468,000 in funding. In total, Curtin University had eight successful applicants, the most out of any Western Australian University. Each of the awarded researchers and their projects are as follows: - Dr Huan Li: Critical and precious metals recovery from e-waste - Dr Yongqiang Chen: Green lithium mining from granite reservoirs - Dr Daqin Guan: Protonic ceramic fuel cells for operation under <400 °C - Dr Qiucheng Xu: Thiol ligands modified Cu catalysts for high-rate CO2 reduction to ethanol - Dr Yijun Zhong: High-voltage proton batteries operating at ultralow temperature. Sounds like a solid plan, right? 🤔 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧. 😰 After a “serious oopsie” misconfiguration on the Google side, the giant cloud had to confess (and profusely apologize) that they accidentally deleted UniSuper’s 𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐑𝐄 subscription. UniSuper even prepared for an outage by duplicating their environments in two different locations. Guess what? 𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐅. 𝐆𝐎𝐍𝐄! Both locations were eradicated and over 600,000 investors were locked out of their accounts for over a week. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝! 😎 🚀 UniSuper was only able to restore services because they had backups in place with another cloud provider. Bringing the heat… A research team led by QUT (Queensland University of Technology) has developed an ultra-thin, flexible film that can power wearable devices using body heat— eliminating the need for batteries. This technology also shows promise for cooling electronic chips, potentially helping smartphones and computers run more efficiently. The team tackled major challenges in creating flexible thermoelectric devices by combining solvothermal synthesis (which forms nanocrystals in a solvent under high temperature and pressure), screen-printing, and sintering.
