Program: Should school students be allowed to protest?

Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.

A protest by thousands of students around Australia, including in parts of regional Queensland, last week drew plenty of attention with their sassy signs.

However, the students also drew intense criticism from the government, in particular Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Resources Minister Matt Canavan, who declared the students were heading for life on the dole queue and ought to have been in school learning to build mines and drill for oil.

Doctor Karena Menzie-Ballantyne researches active and global citizenship at Central Queensland University and she spoke to the ABC's Sheridan Stewart.
