Empowering social change through location data and technology and the Spatial WA Program were among an array of topics discussed at the recent #Locate24 conference. Our Data Collaboration Director Peter Birkett and Spatial WA Program Director Darren Mottolini each explored their themes with attendees as part of the three-day program. Mr Birkett’s thought-provoking presentation looked at how using these resources can play an important role in influencing social change through place naming. He said the opportunity to delve into this multi-layered topic was a great way to showcase Landgate’s work in this space. “It was also a chance to inform and engage the audience and importantly encourage them to unpack the concept of ‘place naming’ at a deeper level,” he said. “Locate24 brought together industry experts from far and wide to share a wealth of knowledge from the many different organisations represented.” The conference was a fantastic opportunity to highlight Landgate’s commitment to the innovate use of data at a key national geospatial event. Landgate was proud to be a bronze sponsor of Locate24, which is the Geospatial Council of Australia's national conference. 📸: Data Collaboration Director Peter Birkett, DCS Spatial Services Geographical Names Board Place Names Manager Lisa Powell and Department of Transport and Planning Geographic Names Victoria Team Leader Rafe Benli.

🗓️ Flashback to the golden days of automative history! Did you know that right here in WA, where the Junior School of Iona Presentation College now stands, was once home to a bustling Holden factory? 🚗 From 1926 to 1972, General Motors (Australia) operated a vehicle assembly plant, where around 200 workers assembled cars at an average rate of six vehicles per hour! In 1931, General Motors (Australia) merged with Holden Motor Body Builders to become General Motors-Holden Limited. 🛩️ Surviving through the Great Depression, the factory played an important part during the Second World War, where it was used to manufacture and repair military aircraft and vehicles. Post war, normal operations resumed with an impressive lineup of vehicles including Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, La Salles, Vaux-halls, Buicks, Chevrolets, Bedfords and Holdens until its closure in 1972. 👇 Do you know someone who still owns a Perth-built vehicle? Let us know in the comments! 📸 Check out these photos from 1965, 1981, 1985 and 2023. Holden Town of Mosman Park Iona Presentation Primary School Iona Presentation College

Meet Emily, from our Data Collaboration team. What does a Lead Programs Consultant do? The Lead Programs Consultant provides oversight and direction for strategic, contentious and high-profile naming activity. My role is responsible for shaping how our State’s history, heritage and languages are preserved through place naming. What do you enjoy about working at Landgate? Firstly, I love my team, we have a great culture in Data Collaboration with lots of fun people to work with. I also love that the work I do plays a small part in creating positive social change through Aboriginal place naming initiatives. Contributing to the preservation of culture and language through place naming is incredibly rewarding for me, and I’ve really enjoyed working in this space. Participating in the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) Place Names Working Group is also a bonus! One thing I have really appreciated since joining Landgate is the flexibility to work from home, allowing me to juggle work and young children. Keen to join the team? Welcome to Throwback Thursday where we will revisit the history related to our state, including how some of our places within Western Australia came to be known. Place names are an important part of how we locate our place in the world, and can be a way of telling stories and sharing history. Have you ever been to Quindalup? Located approximately 250km south of Perth and 21km west of Busselton, you may have driven through this small town when exploring the amazing caves and wineries of Cape Naturaliste and surrounds. In the 1860’s, a timber mill was built here by the name of Quindalup, exporting timber through a jetty on the coast and marking one of the state’s earliest timber industries. Quindalup is an Aboriginal name meaning ‘the place of quendas’, referring to a small bandicoot commonly found in the area, as pictured. After a request by local fisherman in the area to subdivide the beachfront land, surveys of “working mens blocks” were made, and the townsite of Quindalup was gazetted in 1899. Would you like your town or suburb to be featured next? Let us know in the comments! The Margaret River Region Australia's South West Fawna Inc
